MT creates a friendly and inclusive working environment and everyone I have worked with so far is super friendly and helpful. When starting at MT, you will likely be assigned a team and will work with the same group of people over different projects, which is nice so you can get to know your team members and how they work.
MT is a 100% remote working company, so it’s possible to do this job from outside the USA, as I do as well as some other members of my team. The front end developer job is a mixture of working independently and working with others through meetings (Google Hangouts), Slack conversations and GitHub.
The independent work aspect of the job can be done at any time, but there does need to be some working hours overlap time at the same time as other team members in the USA, so it is not 100% asynchronous working.
We have team meetings twice a week to go through the work for the next few days, so it is always clear about what needs to be done and when. In addition we can also always check in with our PM if something is not clear or there is a blocker which means a task can’t be completed.
MT has some great clients to work with and standards are high. They take code reviews, accessibility and QA seriously, which isn’t always the case with some agencies, and means I can feel proud of the work delivered.

We don’t interact too much with people on other teams day to day, which is perhaps a downside of working remotely, however MT have just re-started bi-weekly FE meetings, so I am looking forward to getting to know others and learn about projects other teams are working on.
MT has specific processes and systems which are a bit of a learning curve to start with, although they are aware of this and give you plenty of time to learn and adjust.
Docker (VM that is used for all dev work) is quite slow on a Mac, but they are looking into providing alternatives to Docker in the future.

Remote work, tight-knit team, highly skilled coworkers, inclusive and lgbtq+ friendly, equipment/office stipend, management very transparent about goals and cashflow (even when we hit down turns with client duds), Project managers are highly attentive, 25 PTO days, professional development opportunities. They added group insurance for 2020 and will continue offering it going forward.

No 401k yet and timezones are always a huge challenge when working with team members on remote teams.

- A lot of the coworkers and clients are America-based which may present an organizational challenge if you live in a timezone that is significantly different from the US ones.
- Recent restructure shook up the teams a bit, but all are settling in.
- As a designer I sometimes don't get to work with my team as much as I'd like to, and work with other teams that need design work - but shifting is kept easy and all of the people I've interacted with (in work or after work) have been awesome.

I like the company, management, and direction of the company. They have done a great job of balancing work and personal life while making all of their employees feel comfortable. There have been a lot of good discussions around diversity, and I hope they continue working to improve and become a leader in this area.
I appreciate that they aren't wholly driven by profits and there are quality ethics driving the direction of the company.
My advice would be to make sure to build more stability and continuity in team structure to ensure projects are run as smoothly as possible. I know agency work can be challenging in this way, but I believe it would allow the work Modern Tribe produces to be even better.

I've been freelancing almost my entire life, and I was impressed during the interview and on-boarding process at Modern Tribe, a thing that I never experienced before. Feeling such a focus in culture from the very beginning at the interview process made me realize I was signing up for something special, and I wasn't wrong, people at Modern Tribe are amazing, professional, and always there to set you up for success. Clients and projects are very interesting, and the line of products is the industry-leading in the WordPress platform. I've been able to interact with different teams as a contractor, and I have sensed that the culture is very consistent across teams.

As a remote company, the only con I can find is that you don't get to interact with your teammates in person, however, team trips are planned at different times a year, which is a very good opportunity to socialize.
