In my tenure at this establishment, I navigated through a maze of workplace dynamics marked by inadequate training, inconsistent communication, and lax hygiene standards. The onboarding process fell short, lacking comprehensive training materials or an employee handbook, leaving me uninformed about key operational policies. This deficiency was compounded by the absence of an employee number, leading to a directive to manually log my clock-in and out times. This practice revealed a paradox: a reliance on informal methods for critical timekeeping, paired with an expectation for precision, where management would express frustration if these ad-hoc procedures were not followed to the letter.
A particularly telling incident that highlighted the management's reliance on informal and inconsistent practices involved "Billy" (a pseudonym), who tasked me with cleaning the glass surfaces. Billy was not present to observe my initial efforts, raising questions about his later assessment of my work. This issue became more pronounced when "Ratchet" (another pseudonym), an assistant manager, inquired with Billy about my execution of the task. Ratchet's quick acceptance of Billy's account, despite her own lack of direct observation, exemplified a troubling trend within the management team to prioritize hearsay over tangible evidence or firsthand accounts.
Amid these challenges, my struggle with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) further complicated my ability to adhere to workplace expectations, particularly the requirement to vocally greet customers with "Welcome to Moe's" loudly and clearly. My condition affects my ability to regulate the volume of my speech, making it difficult for me to gauge how loud I am being. Despite this, there was little effort from management to understand or accommodate my needs, which could have mitigated misunderstandings and allowed me to better meet the expectations set forth.
The contrasting dynamics within the workplace were starkly illuminated by the warmth and professionalism of colleagues like "Jazzy" and "Lizzy" (also pseudonyms), who stood out as beacons of support. Despite the positivity brought by these interactions, the overarching issues related to training, communication, and managerial conduct left a profound impact on my experience. The reliance on informal systems and hearsay, coupled with a lack of accommodation for CAPD, underscored the need for a more systematic, transparent, and equitable approach to management and employee relations.
