Faculty and staff support each other and the students on a case by case basis. Truly a community of individuals where everyone is free to be themselves and explore a wide range of artistic disciplines. Big on interdisciplinary practice and story-telling with a robust writing curriculum that works in tandem with other departments. Despite its small size, it keeps up with the times. Montserrat has overhauled the foundations program to expose students a smorgasbord of art-making processes and a framework for making and talking about art from several disciplines. Five-minute walk to a beautiful beach. This is also the only place I’ve worked where adjuncts can apply for titles, which is a great perk if you aspire to a full-time position. Responsive and knowledgeable computer tech staff to help with inevitable glitches too.

Small school means pay is on the low side, but it’s competitive with non-unionized schools in the area. Students don’t always do the work if they don’t feel like it, which slows down the momentum of classes.

Management is accessible enough so we contact them directly if issues arise. They’re up against challenges all art schools face (low enrollment, limited financial support for the arts) but they have a positive and ever-evolving plan for staying competitive. The maker space and foundations program are good examples of this.

Excellent faculty, wonderful students, loads of PTO
|
Terrible pay, few advancement opportunities, inept HR, staff are downright unkind to students and petty towards other staff members (small community, lots of gossip, may also be because the leadership is abhorrent and they themselves are struggling to make their salaries work). It's evident that everyone is on their way out, even the President is fielding offers. Best advice to prospective employees would be to ask to speak to employees at other departments before committing.

Montserrat is such a great community that most of us love coming to work every day! The staff and faculty are wonderful to each other and to the students. They know why they are here and have a passion for the mission of educating students to their highest potential. Working here is extremely rewarding!

Because the college is small, salaries are not high and there are not as many chances of advancement than available at a larger institution.
