Avoid Monzo for Your Well-being
|
I am compelled to provide a cautionary review of Monzo, as my experience with the company has been nothing short of detrimental to my mental health and overall well-being. After enduring 2.5 years of stress and frustration, I left Monzo with a stress-related illness, a clear testament to the toxic work environment cultivated within the organisation.
One of the most distressing aspects of working at Monzo is the apparent indifference towards employee concerns. Despite raising issues, it often felt like my concerns fell on deaf ears, with little to no action taken to address them.
Monzo places an undue emphasis on quantity over quality (despite claiming quality is more important to them), which inevitably impacts both your pay and progression within the company. The expectation for high-quality work is set impossibly high, while the resources and support provided are woefully inadequate. Training is virtually nonexistent, leaving employees to fend for themselves amidst a sea of confusion and ambiguity of sifting through process pages.
Furthermore, the company's culture can be described as cult-like, with attempts to mask shortcomings with frivolous tactics such as the excessive use of emojis. It's evident that Monzo priorities appearances over substance, a concerning trend that permeates throughout the company.
Adding insult to injury, the promise of a pay rise accompanying a change to a role with increased responsibility is nonexistent . Employees are expected to take on more without any corresponding increase in compensation - a clear exploitation of their dedication and hard work.
In conclusion, I strongly advise against sacrificing your well-being for the sake of a wage at Monzo. The financial reward is not worth the toll it takes on your mental and physical health. I implore anyone considering employment at Monzo to explore alternative opportunities, as this glorified call centre is a breeding ground for burnout and disillusionment.

This was a great role and Monzo was a great company to work for which genuinely cared about staff. The position was fully remote and Monzo really has a great way of making remote work extremely well.

Horrible targets where QA will fail you over very minor mistakes
You're watched on everything to the second
Constant stress from higher ups
Imabalanced shifts that don't match what is promised in training
Constant angry customers due to company processes being broken and you will get zero support in dealing with them
Barely any training on calls
Outsourced staff on the rise who have no idea what they're doing, getting away with it, and most the time you're cleaning up their mistakes
Disputes teams who copy paste responses without even bothering to read the situation
"Well being team" who will copy paste a response to a customer threatening their life then disappear for hours
Banning customers over the stupidest purchases and you can't even help the customer when they call for help. No other bank does this.
Severely understaffed during busy periods
They will change a process mid-shift without warning and you're somehow supposed to know this
Don't bother telling them about your mental health or disability, they do not care and will not make adjustments
The search site you have to use to find the right process is absoloutly over-bloated and disagraceful
Only favourites get promotions

everyone seemed super stressed and overworked. Christmas party was pretty sad. Kinda a shame as it seemed like the culture used to be much better. Quality of code was pretty dire too.

There is a real lack of managerial competency. People without the necessary skills are promoted, no responsibility or accountability is shown. No one dares criticise for fear of being shunned and investigated formally.

I don't recommended monzo. I felt the hiring process requires improvement. I felt more support is also needed for staff. They want unnecessary positivity and enthusiasm for a mediocre paying job.

Nice break in my career

Overall I'd say that Monzo is a good company to work for in terms of them looking after their employees. The job role comes with quite a lot of benefits such as a private healthcare plan, £1k a year towards your development and 25 paid sick days.
Despite having to work to KPIs, this is done more as what you should aim for and manager's are always there to offer support if you're falling behind, rather than being told off which can create a lot of stress at work.
The targets that are set within my team are achievable which makes it feel less stressful, considering some of the cases you deal with may provoke those kinds of feelings.
You always have support from senior colleagues whilst working, so if you get a case which you are struggling with, there is always someone available to guide you through it and you are not made to feel bad for asking.
The one thing I think could improve is the pay, but I think that can be set for most companies these days, it's really difficult to survive on the wages of the lowest paid roles in Monzo. So without overtime, it can be a struggle.

What is the best part of working at the company?
They talk the talk. You feel like inclusion is important and they care about you.
What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Your manager gaslighting you all the time. They play good cop/bad cop with everyone. From the company you feel respected and valued, but your manager treats you like garbage. You end up thinking you are the only person with a problem. But when you start asking people you see everyone is working overtime everyday and feeling they are about to be kicked out.
What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
In the big picture the culture is great, but in your relationship with your manager it's very poor. It is not an isolated case. Everybody is stressed and behind.
The only department they say is nice is the Mobile app engineering. Out of that everyone is feeling like they need to work 60h a week to keep up with the unrealistic demands.
What is a typical day like for you at the company?
4 hours of meeting and another 8 running with your tasks.
