Engaging work and supportive coworkers. Everyone wants everyone to succeed, and understanding. There’s some disorganization in the news room that can sometimes leave people underutilized. 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 3.0 5.0 20174 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 2.0 Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mother Jones
private:motherjones https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=20174 Apr 25th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Mother Jones Magazine San Francisco, CA Interesting place to work, but they could go farther to live what they preach Mother Jones is a team of people who care a lot about what they do. They’re a quirky bunch so it’s never too dull a moment. There is a Union for employees. The editorial/business divide is huge. If you’re on the business team you’re often treated as a second class citizen. Add to this it’s an organization helmed by women who tend to promote men over women and silo women into administrative roles. The workplace is nowhere near as diverse as it should be and the management is reticent to open up about this and truly invest in making an intersectionally inclusive workplace. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 3.0 3.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 3.0 3.0 20174 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 4.0 Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mother Jones
private:motherjones https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=20174 Mar 4th, 2018 12:00AM Open Open Mother Jones Magazine United States USA fellowships = internships -decent access to the editorial side of an national american mag... for better or for worse, you see how it actually works. fellowship is definitely a pipeline for employment at MoJo. No promises, obviously, but lots of staffers came through the fellowship. Be proactive and play the office politics game, bc the pub will string people along w/o an actual offer as long as they can you will become a better reporter, though just not necessarily in the way you first expected. having what you write fact-checked is a luxury. mojo understands that you can get cheap labor by dangling institutional prestige before desperate young journalists. this is the model for its many fellowships. experience varies dramatically based on which "fellowship" you're in, and which editors you're paired with. fact-checking and other demands can be extreme, making it very hard for some fellows (editorial, SF office especially) to work on their own writing/reporting. At their heart, most of the "fellowships" are actually "internships," and fellows often end up feeling exploited at the end of many days. experience of DC fellows is considered to be better than SF. Pay is low across the board, but at least now in compliance with local minimum wage statues. tread carefully. for all the bad, it is a useful chance to build crucial connections/patronage, which are unfortunately a prereq to succeed in this industry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -1.0 NEGATIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 3.0 3.0 2.0 3.0 3.0 2.0 2.0 20174 Open there are a lot of very talented reporters and writers in the office (both fellows and staffers) who aren't reporting or writing as much as they could/should be due to factors beyond their control. sincerely solicit their feedback more often, and incorporate it into editorial direction. Most are extremely well qualified to report successfully at this political moment, but feel hamstringed by out-of-touch/slow-to-respond editorial leadership. you badly need more editorial leadership of color. decision makers are almost 100 percent white, and it shows on the outside. deal with bad behavior by boys meaningfully and transparently. 0.0 [] INTERN No No 0.0 Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mother Jones
private:motherjones https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=20174 May 17th, 2017 12:00AM Open Open Mother Jones Magazine Director San Francisco, CA Great place to work but expect few resources Smart, passionate colleagues, great benefits, good pay (especially in the nonprofit and/or media space), and real opportunities for growth if you work smart and work hard. Plus you're working for an organization doing good in the world. Lack of resources on the business/tech side of things is understandable since editorial is the focus of the organization but it does mean staff are overtaxed, less can be accomplished, and work suffers due to burnout related turnover and lack of institutional knowledge. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 4.0 5.0 3.0 5.0 5.0 3.0 20174 Open Invest in the systems and people that do the work behind the scenes. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 20.0 Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mother Jones

private:motherjones https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=20174 Jul 15th, 2015 12:00AM Open Open Mother Jones Magazine Administrative Assistant San Francisco, CA Administrative Assistant An inspiring place to work, I really loved my coworkers, the product and felt like I was constantly learning new things. While I can only speak from experience regarding one department, they are pretty good about transitioning interns to full-time staff and moving hardworking low-level staff into better positions - there were a lot of long-time staff when I was there, which I generally take as a good sign in a company (means good pay and upward mobility). I realized that I hate being in Admin, not necessarily because of the company but just that wasn't the right role for me. If another position had opened, I would have stayed but I'm much happier working on policy and program management. Also, my last year was NOT 2011, it was 2009 but that wasn't an option. 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 20174 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mar 22nd, 2021 09:42PM Mother Jones
