If you just need to earn an income, there are much worse ways to earn much less, but if you're looking for worthwhile work, you won't find it here.
Everyone's friendly, the dress is casual, and as long as you don't abuse the privilege, you can walk away from your desk at any time to get some fresh air and let your mind wander. The on-site walking path and gym are great for this and can be used on the clock. However, the emphasis on service to others and the many posters sporting the motto "Professional Excellence" quickly prove ironic given the following points:
1. A monthly goal made from dividing the record number for pages cleared in a year by 12 is adhered to such that employees are asked to come in the last Saturday of a month not on track to meet that goal, ignoring how averages work (we were asked to come in every month I worked there).
2. All pages in a project are cleared at once, meaning pages aren't counted until the final page is completed. This combined with adherence to the arbitrary monthly goal means that jobs are done based on whether they can be done before the end of the month rather than their respective due dates to clients (I found a job that was six months overdue and was explicitly told not to worry about it and instead work smaller jobs not due for several months).
3. My supervisor regularly gave me contradictory instructions about what I was actually supposed to do in my job: sometimes I was to correct spelling and grammar, sometimes I was to make sure everything had been duplicated, errors and all. This made much more sense long after I left and made friends with someone who had worked there years before and said that the company is required to hire "proofreaders" in name only to fill a quota.
So if you're okay with what's essentially busywork whose only purpose is a paycheck, you'll like this place fine. There was a time when I would have loved this job. But if you actually want to do something of service to others, a phrase you will here regularly from the company president, Municipal Code Corporation is not for you.
