private:nationaloceanographycentre https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=877129 Nov 21st, 2020 12:00AM Open Open National Oceanograpy Center Technician Southampton, England All the gear, but no idea... As a sea going technician within NMF the accommodation on board is extremely good, single berth cabins. Off shore time is limited to around two months at most per trip and attracts an extra sea going allowance on top of salary. Being a predominantly government funded organisation the shore side facilities and workshops are well funded and equipped. The NOC canteen is very good. Free car parking. Time off in lieu for sea going duties is a extra plus. Slow to take up new ideas, and seems to be behind the curve technically and operationally compared to similar organisations, possibly due to the safe public funding stream at the time. Some very unpleasant incidents of bullying in the past particularly in NMF with HR and director leadership performing poorly, seemingly not wanting to deal with problem staff and managers. Pay increments per year can be limited. Full STCW certification was not required for sea going technicians which was worrying. private:nationaloceanographycentre https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=877129 Jun 21st, 2020 12:00AM Open Open National Oceanograpy Center Anonymous Southampton, England Far too much politics - Great work/life balance (30 days holiday) - Good pension (this might have changed now) - Far too much politics. People who shouldn’t have a say in policy have too much power and therefore the organisation is stuck in the past and progress is incredibly slow. Policy decisions are often derailed by individual egos. - Lower salaries than average - Some managers shouldn’t be managers due to poor leadership and sometimes there have been questionable decisions with zero consequences. - There are no consequences for poor work. Some staff know this and will do almost no work all day as they know they can get away with it. HR aren’t willing to act as terrified of their own staff. - Hard working employees will therefore take the vast majority of the workload, which breeds resentment. - No room for progression or pay rises. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 1.0 3.0 4.0 4.0 1.0 2.0 2.0 877129 Open Provide better opportunities for progression or at least recognise staff who work hard but aren’t exactly on the “front line” so won’t be as easily noticed for staff recognition rewards. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 0.0 Mar 24th, 2021 10:56PM Mar 24th, 2021 10:56PM National Oceanography Centre
private:nationaloceanographycentre https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=877129 Jun 14th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open National Oceanograpy Center United Kingdom GBR Don't care about their people especially their mariners. Work life balance. Type of work. Fellow crew. Management do not care about their staff especially if you are a mariner. Mariners often completely forgotten about. Take advantage of those at the bottom who actually do the work. Management increasingly navy who manage as though they are still in the navy and expect that no matter how badly they treat you you will do as they say without question. A lot of problems just get ignored or swept under the carpet by management. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 2.0 2.0 3.0 1.0 2.0 3.0 1.0 877129 Open Change NMF senior management of seagoing staff - mariners & technicians 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 4.0 Mar 24th, 2021 10:56PM Mar 24th, 2021 10:56PM National Oceanography Centre
