They have worked really hard to hire people that are aligned with the mission, and who are high quality human beings. As a result, I have loved working with almost everyone here. And when there have been tough times with coworkers, I've been encouraged and given the tools to directly address problems, which has led to transformations in those relationships and outcomes in our work together. Our CEO, Lea, is really a special person. She is ridiculously smart, and charismatic. She works tirelessly to make NationBuilder a success, and is never pretentious. She's exactly the type of person I want to work for. It doesn't seem like things have always been as well run here as they are now. In some ways, I think we're still recovering from that. Since I've been here though, through some leadership changes, some departures, and some very intentional work on areas that weren't professional enough, things have really started moving in the right direction. I would also say that the culture here is very deliberate and thought out. It really works for me, but I've seen some other people that didn't seem to buy in. Things have also changed and become less heavy-handed since the days of community circles, and some of the other things I noticed mentioned in Glassdoor reviews. If you're looking for a place where people are asked to grow, even if it means being uncomfortable at times, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a place that is hyper-inclusive, this is the place for you. If you're just looking for a 9-5 that you don't need to be invested in, look elsewhere. A big portion of the company works remotely, so we spend a lot of time on Zoom. Constant gaslighting. Employees forced to participate in "circles", a group-based business version of Scientology's "audits". Disgusting practice. There is a mass of people that are believe they are doing the right thing. Pay isn't all that bad either for market rate work. If you're willing to stick around, there is enough attrition at all levels that you can quickly be promoted into a job you are not qualified for with no training to support you. This is a straight up cult. Full stop. From the book "The Internet is my Religion" pushed on every employee from day one to the criminally negligent emotional engagement forced on all employees veiled in what are called "Circles", this company goes out of its way to indoctrinate you or out you as soon as possible if discovered a threat to the culture. Expect to be gaslit by management at every turn. No amount of paint is going to fix what are very painful and clear usability issues. You helped elect horrible leaders worldwide in the name of progress. Summits are an interesting experience. They uproot promising professionals, move them to LA, then fire more than half after promising them multi year contracts and vested options. The CEO let’s people go, but instead of being a man and firing them in person, he watches from afar and let’s his HRminions do the dirty work. If you've been hired, congrats. But also, you're not done. The company hires en masse and then fires a significant number of new employees, sometimes within weeks. Of the group of new hires I started with, nearly half were fired at the end of orientation and none lasted more than six months. It's a tremendous place to work and the staff are the kindest and most thoughtful group of people I've ever met. It's a deliberately developmental organization that invests in its people and provides not just opportunities but encouragement to grow. There's been a leadership transition (bigger than new CEO) that's elevated an incredibly talented group of new executives to senior leadership from both inside and outside the org over the last two years. The values of the company are front and center. People are responsive, on time and extremely respectful to their colleagues. NationBuilder is a place where many different people can thrive. The culture is one of authenticity and personal responsibility. It is a family of people who want to change the world for the better. Extremely good at growing people who this is their first or second job. You need to be emotionally mature to understand, embrace and thrive within the culture. People, especially men, who are not used to receiving feedback from women struggle. If you want a job that you check in and check out, this is not for you. They have funding issues and your stability in the job is highly unlikely. First the hire you on a contract basis, where the fail to make payments on timely manner( your checks will always be late). Then they insult you before they feel like they need to let you go. This confuses the employee because none of the accusations make sense. Finally, they apologize by calling this whole situation a mere mis-understanding, and letting you go. And yes i am still waiting for the last two checks and its been a month. Please don’t waste your time especially if you are being hired on a contract basis and you are coming from another state.
