Don't count on your team leader letting you in on what's expected or supporting you to get there. They would prefer to pay you pittance ($11 an hour) while you work part time for one year, and if you're worthy, after that you will go full time. It's anyone's guess as to what "worthy" actually means. Good luck! Meanwhile, they will throw out bait—maybe a trip to Churchill, free snacks and fizzy water (woo!), pro deals (which you can be privy to at other companies, though here you're led to believe you're special in that way), and use of a ski house, which only makes sense if you ski. And during this first year, you have the Boulder area's high cost of living to deal with. So, really, you can't afford to work here unless you have a highly paid significant other who works in a different industry. Think about it. Where can you live around Boulder if you're making $11 an hour? Maybe affordable housing, but even that is a stretch. The owner bought everyone an electric bike for Christmas so they can commute that way, but realistically, when you have to live in Denver or north of Longmont or Golden or Gold Hill, you're NOT going to commute on two wheels! So you MUST drive. So thanks but no thanks to the bike. Have a 90-day review and give them more money at that point. Employees need to be able to ask what expectations there are and how the company will support them. Currently, employees are basically asked to "volunteer" for a year before they have any clue if they will be able to continue. By providing them you are helping us be a better company. It seems clear that your Team Leader has not given you feedback to the level that you\u2019d like. Our review process is designed to be annual (with additional performance reviews if needed), but I will certainly bring to the Management Team the idea of changing this so that each employee has a formal review twice a year rather than just once. I cannot guarantee this will happen as management makes these decisions as a team, but I will put this suggestion forward. Regarding pay, you are correct that staff who come in with no experience in our field are asked to demonstrate their contribution and effectiveness at low pay, although no longer at $11/hr. We are a \u201cprove it to me\u201d organization, where the initial period requires sacrifice, but then compensation grows quite rapidly. Every member of the Management Team, as well as other long-timers at the company, have also started with compensation at a modest level with the growth coming based on merit to be among the highest in our industry. (I personally regularly do comparative pay research to ensure that.) I do understand the challenges you and others initially face, though, and our Management Team will be taking a hard look at our compensation policies. I find your comments about the E-bikes I gave to the staff somewhat surprising. That was meant as a gift from me personally to show my appreciation for our staff\u2019s hard work and to encourage alternative modes of transportation, both while commuting to the office and around their home towns. We are, first and foremost, an environmental organization and I felt that spending my personal earnings in this manner demonstrated our commitment to sustainability. I know plenty of staff appreciated the bikes very much and we\u2019ve seen our employee ride to work days multiply four-fold. Since the holiday season when I presented these gifts, we have developed the \u201cNat Hab Bike Bank\u201d for those employees who aren\u2019t using their E-bikes to put them in a loaner pool for new employees who were hired after this gift was given and for employees\u2019 families. If you\u2019re not using yours, I encourage you to place it in the bank so we can remove carbon releases from other people\u2019s commutes and errands. Team building retreats, travel benefits, commitment to work / life balance. Employees truly believe in what they do and are driven to continually make strides in conservation. Management really cares about its employees and will find ways to set you up for success. Many new middle management positions have been created which gives a clearer growth pattern for new employees. We have grown so quickly over the years that communication issues can arise with so many changing job roles. Employees include a wide range of interests and ages and there are plenty of fun social events. The company is prosperous and growing. For some of us, it's long hours, high stress, low pay, poor management, biased & outdated internal policies and extremely limited opportunities for upward mobility.
