underpaid, but fun job
|
Some departments get paid more than others mainly because of turnover rate. But the downfall is that the departments that get paid more, make more than the jobs with more responsibility. It really drains employees.
Direct managers are amazing but higher management is just really unwilling to give raises that aren’t so little. A liveable wage would be nice.
Also they rarely give full time positions out. And when there’s a lead position that’s open for applying, they pretty much have their mindset on who gets it.
The job is fun though. It’s really cool to get special perks like hanging out with the African penguins (pre-covid) when you first got hired or for team member appreciation week. Plus you get free tickets every paycheck so you can give them out to family or friends. Plus there’s an employee discount on annual passes, gift shop, additional experiences (pre-covid), candy store, cafe, and events.

The most toxic work environment imaginable. Management only cares about themselves and money. Staff are treated as disposable things, yet are horribly understaffed. Good at keeping up appearances for guests. Prepare to work weekends and holidays. No balance. Also prepare to do your job and someone else’s- but do it with a smile or you will get in trouble.

It was a fun place to work. I worked in a shop that sold sweet treats such as, homemade fudge, cotton candy, and other sweets. It was a pretty far commute and the pay wasn't very good.

Mind-numbing. It’s a job though!
|
Things may have changed since I worked here, since the aquarium seemed totally unable to keep a steady vendor for photography. In the MONTHS I worked here I was technically an employee of three different companies.
Pay was honestly pathetic, benefits were worse (as in, not offered, unless you count the free admission on your off time which was overrated it loses its charm the fourth time you walk through it). Hours were decent, since it was never open late to the public so you never had to worry about super late nights here. But full-time wasn’t really offered. At all. Uniform was uncomfortable, and it was kind of stressful to be held responsible for thousands of dollars in Nikon equipment for just above minimum wage in a building full if water and germs (sorry, some of the guests were gross and weird to be totally honest).
My feet often hurt from standing on concrete in one spot for hours. My ears often hurt from screaming children during the holidays when Santa visited (and from the hellish loop of maybe six tropical steel drum covers of Christmas songs played throughout the aquarium from November 1st to January 1st). My vocal cords often hurt from straining my voice to sound like a Disney World employee when greeting everyone unfortunate enough to come down the escalator to enter the aquarium and be spotted by me. And there was constant stress from meeting photography/sales goals (take photos equal to 4x the projected guest attendance for the day, sell $1.25 x projected attendance in photos even though everyone brought their own camera or, like, owns a cell phone with a camera, etc.). Not worth the pay. Some people here seemed much happier, but those people were also high school students working weekends only who hadn’t had another job yet.

Great place to work. Co-workers are very friendly. It's always a pleasure to make our guests feel welcomed and to ensure they have a memorable time. Some days are really slow but weekends make up for that.
