So much potential to be better. New Profit generates a lot of hype about its work, but there's little substance or impact to back that up. The organization is plagued by a toxic, political work environment (promotions are inconsistent and based on favoritism), extremely poor management, and a poor business model. There are also varying levels of understanding and commitment to promoting equity and diversity. Staff overall are smart, committed and very hard-working; some of the best people in the social sector work here. Well paid relative to most of the social sector, with great opportunities for senior staff to make connections and build their individual brands. Creative ideas bubbling in some areas (Gathering, communications, accelerators). Incredibly toxic culture, oriented toward loyalty to and relationship with an insecure CEO who is quite volatile. Strategy is unclear, planning and management of initiatives is poor, financial management is poor (with resulting ups and downs and impact on staff stress and periodic (and avoidable) job loss. Very gossipy culture. Disconnect between Executive management, senior partners (who are overstressed and undersupported for the most part) and junior staff (who blame the mid level, as those are the folks they interact with). Undercurrent of racial tension not being well-address through poorly thought through diversity initiative.
