You're immediately vested for retirement and if you work there for a year, the university chips in generously. If you have to put a kid through college, its worth it. Workload creep, lack of advancement, the faculty/administrator/staff divide really hurts the work environment. Faculty actively gossip and complain about staff, but never formally address in any way. Faculty complain about staff in front of students.
