Great benefits for both exempt and non-exempt roles. Friendly colleagues. Fairly easy commute (downtown Chicago campus). Lots of networking opportunities. This is one of those workplaces where if you are a 'rockstar' hardworking employee you will be rewarded with more work -- not a raise or promotion. No clear paths or structure to earn a promotion, or salary increase. If you manage to get hired, negotiate for the highest base salary you can FROM THE START. It's likely the only time the conversation will happen over the next 5 years. It is also easier to quit your current position and re-apply for a different, higher paying job at NU than it is to get promoted for being a good employee. If you manage to negotiate a raise, it will be marginal (less than 5%). Your experience will vary wildly based on the PI or the department you are in. Some PIs will be very involved with the day-to-day operations, while others you may not speak to more than once a week. Admin assistants are stretched way too thin, so others need to pick up the slack/overflow work as a result. This is not the admins fault -- they are just understaffed. Probably unsurprising, but every PhD and MD thinks they are the smartest person at the university. Turnover is so high in those roles across the university because everything is a stopgap solution on an earlier mistake of someone who doesn't work there anymore. And when you do manage to make a good hire, don't overload them with so much work that they leave the university.
