Great but takes a lot of hard dedication and a very open schedule

- Very Collaborative
- Almost unlimited PTO (within reason as long as you got the work done)
- Great Health Insurance
- Great resources
My time at Nutshell was shaping and amazing. I truly grew from working here and developed skills that I'll take with me the rest of my life. The team and the people are all incredibly supportive and caring. Whenever you're going through something, or having a rough time, or even not having a rough time, they'll stand up for you and have your back. The culture is really great.

- Lack of processes
The downsides to Nutshell was that to grow you had to put in a lot outside of work, both money and timewise which makes balancing work and life very difficult. If you want to just keep working your 40hrs you'll stay at the position you're at and be just happy, but if you want to advance and earn a promotion or more responsibilities you have to really put in more than 40hrs which can be exhausting and is not for everyone. Since it's a startup culture and the room for growth without serious commitment is incredibly limiting, the turnover can be a bit high so you see coworkers come and go all the time. They're small and as such, they invest in you emotionally (again, they are all incredibly supporting and loving people) but beyond salary and typical benefits, they can't invest much further than that.

You guys are awesome and I hope you achieve your long term goals. My advice would be to work more towards helping people advance within the company. If new leadership roles or even middle management roles are available, advertise and interview from within, first, before advertising for outside candidates.

High turnover, bro environment

Good benefits.
Some great coworkers (but turnover is really high so I wouldn’t count on this).
Depending on your position, good work-life balance.
Some flexibility about working from home.

Don’t expect a management team that is approachable, empathetic, or helpful. I found them to be very callous and egotistical.
Management seemed really out of touch, ie. forcing all employees to come to a meeting about shares of the company when many employees didn’t actually have any. Clearly this is something that would alienate many employees, why bother?
Very bro environment with beer fridges, happy hours, ping pong. Clearly benefits those with flexible schedules, which is obviously going so exclude customer facing teams.
Turnover is outrageous.

Great team - even though the work can be tiring, I feel like I'm spending my time with awesome people who I would choose to hang out with.
Leadership - this company is run by people who genuinely care. In my many conversations with our leadership team, I have always felt that they've tried to put people first when making decisions.
Cool product - I'd never, ever thought of CRM as a software that could be fun to work with/on, from the end-user perspective or from the development side. Big focus on design & usability.
Transparency - I've never felt in the dark about the state of the business.

Lean startup means somewhat limited resources. You make your own career growth in a lot of ways, which is extremely challenging when you're so focused on the job at hand.

There are some incredibly intelligent and talented people working there who make the workplace enjoyable.
|
During your interview, they sell it like they're a cool startup where you you have "lots of opportunity", however there are not any real opportunities to advance your career. Exemplary employees spend years with the company and never advance, since upper management believes in hiring from the outside when new positions are needed. Management is bad, sometimes to the point of being toxic. One of the founders is passive-aggressive. Don't dare to disagree with him, or you'll become his next target. He is very critical and is willing to throw you under the bus to avoid making himself look bad. Work environment is not friendly to employees who have families, though management would deny that this is the case (without bothering to even think about that feedback or ask any questions to find out what might cause someone to feel that way). The lack of work-life balance that managers pressure you into is one example of this, another example is that they reduced the maternity leave policy conveniently right after adding more women to the company.

Listen to your employees. Consider how it feels to be in their shoes. Embrace differences in opinion rather than shaming people. Don't just talk the talk, you have to enforce the culture that you claim to have. If someone's behavior conflicts with the culture you want, don't accept it.
