Toxic & Chaotic Revolving Door of Leadership; No Direction
|
|
-- You will work with some truly great people
-- Compensation is competitive
-- Good perks, especially daily free lunch
-- A company with great promise, and a product that aims to solve real problems.
|
-- Executive leadership team is clueless and toxic. I have never seen so many layers of leadership at a company before, and Observe.AI is still small! The never-ending carousel of leaders only adds to the confusion, with a leadership change seemingly every quarter. There is a constant addition of new leaders who seem to use Observe as an opportunity to get a bigger title, and then move on to something else. Too much yelling, arguing, and finger-pointing and too many leaders playing politics trying to stay on the right side of the CEO (classic Yes people culture). Most leaders do not even understand the product, as they have never had to learn it; crazy that this is allowed at a 'start-up' or even midsize company.
-- The Product, while having great promise, evolves, innovates, and matures at the pace of a sloth crossing a road. The entire time I was there, I think we shipped 3 features (and shipped them poorly at that). While it is true that the company was ahead of its time with AI, LLMs, and Generative AI, for some reason the company refused to market this or even talk about it until it was front and center in the news...talk about missed marketing opportunities!
-- Diversity -- what diversity? It seems like the company is committed to largely hiring the same persona of people that largely fall in line and say 'yes' -- no interest in hiring for challenging opinions or outside perspectives. No diversity of thought, which permits leadership to insulate themselves from day-to-day decisions.
-- Time zones are a struggle -- teams are all over the world and it is nearly impossible to ever 'turn off' from work...this leads to...
-- No work life balance
-- Lack of accountability -- employees are often left to fend for themselves when an issue or bug happens. Leadership culture makes it easy for employees to 'hide in the back' if they are not on the front line.
-- The CEO, while friendly, is a poor leader and fosters a culture of chaos. He does not advocate for his team or employees, and instead tries to stay far enough removed from day-to-day problems and decisions so that he can ensure plausible deniability.

Stop hiring so many leaders; in fact get rid of some expensive leaders to make the ship more nimble, especially at this size and in this economic climate. The answer is not to hire more people, but to increase the efficiency of the roles you already have. Leaders can do IC work as well, they don't all need a giant team. The number of VP+ here is wild and way out of proportion.
Build and ship product faster.
Advocate for your employees, and actually try to ask them and understand the culture and morale (as opposed to running from it and burying your heads in the sand).

Bad management kills culture
|
|
Benefits - thanks to a good HR department that tries to provide good benefits. Above market average.
|
Management absolutely destroys culture with their lack of accountability and constant change of decisions around ICP, compensation, quota, approach to bad quarters, layoffs, etc.
Promotions are not given even though promised and quota has changed every single quarter (40% year to date) followed by a slim 2% salary increase. When faced with problems, they lay-off employees only to hire more and make the same mistakes over and over again. Ghost employees on promotions as well.

Toxic culture and incompetent management
|
|
Good engineering talent in the company
|
The company culture revolves around finding scapegoats for any issues or failures. Instead of encouraging a learning environment where mistakes are part of growth, the management tends to fixate on faults and use them against team members. This has created an environment of constant anxiety, where one is always wary of being blamed for any shortcomings, real or perceived.
professional growth within the company is hindered by a culture of favoritism. Opportunities for advancement seem limited and are often not based on merit, which further contributes to the low morale among the workforce. The management often appears to be in a self-congratulatory loop, ignoring the broader team's concerns and achievements. Adding to these challenges is the instability in the engineering leadership, with frequent changes that disrupt the work dynamic and create uncertainty.

move away from a culture of favoritism and blame. Adopting a more inclusive and merit-based system, coupled with stable and empathetic leadership, is crucial to repair the low morale and encourage genuine team collaboration.
