New constructed office Regardless how nicely the company pitch themselves care about saving everyone on the earth internally or externally, it’s no doubt that nothing sold-able or say even usable by any customer have been built for the past few years. The team is very short vision, do not know who to sell, what to sell and how to build the right product for the right market, they have been living in their own dream that they are on the mission to save lives. In addition, the fundamental reason is the people. Nobody knows how to build a right team, each individual/group love to do things on their own agenda and has no knowledge how to understand user needs. Last thing... really low industry pay, and barely no compensate adjusting. We hire great people who believe in the mission and who want to do something positive to impact the world. The team is incredibly smart, very collaborative, and not afraid to speak their mind. Successful startups need to bulletproof every idea, every decision, and we need people who are both strategic and can get the job done. Like most startups, there are inevitably bumps in the road, rapid course corrections, and hard decisions to be made. Since I started the culture at One Concern has been interesting, to say the least - and this is a good thing. I say this because recognizing blindspots is what we're all about - and it's just not hype. Over the past year. we've held countless events on blind spotting our own biases - and believe me it's a humbling experience. I've got to work on projects that cannot put a $ on - and working with people with different backgrounds and experiences. Our Executive Leadership does have a vision - and being an employee that interacts across different business units I see a vision that is being planned and is being executed. Being at 1C has taught me a bit more about humility than I understood prior to my experiences at 1C. Being at 1C has taught me to pay attention to my own stereotypes and subconscious biases, even though I came from a very diverse community growing up. We all have an interesting story to tell - and this place is filled with people that have them and that will listen. My position involves communication with different departments - and I can tell you for certain that everyone gives a damn about what they do. Everyone makes an effort, that's what has important in company culture. Pro's: Adversity, Blindspotting, Benefits, Culture, People Cons: no food at the moment - but we do get stipend food for company events Recognizing Weaknesses and Turning them into Strengths Every company has its weaknesses but what's important is how fast we address these issues and concerns. As far as my experience is concerned I would say that we are always working on solutions that involve out-of-the-box thinking. Culture is toxic. Modern Tech Stack. Snacks. Flexible work from home. HR, Finance teams seem like great teams to work in. Product teams are growing but no Product value added in the last year. Product team only focuses on short-term wins for clients and never has a plan that is more than a month long. The company cannot even decide which client they want to pursue or which product and keeps flip-flopping between the clients and products. Experienced Managers mismanage. Other managers are all trainee level managers. High Attrition. Most people last a year before moving on. It seems that the cash-cow isn't drying up so you'll have some job security Fails to listen to customer needs. A state of the art flood prediction model went essentially unused by the client because they didn't care for the (not-so) slick UI, they just wanted push notifications as most emergency managers do. So make the shift! Fails to listen to the experts. The data science and engineering teams were loaded with talent, but rather than listen to concerns about scalability, accuracy, and the literal impact on human lives if we got it wrong, they continued to push the idea that we can just throw more money at the problem and get it right. I cringed when an investor pressed the SLT on the science and they responded with buzzwords and inaccurate statements. The NY Times article was partially right in that there was a lot of overselling/underdelivering, but that doesn't mean the science wasn't still state of the art. But since Covid, that's gone. Some good talent in engineering/data science. Terrible management. Nepotism. Smoke and Mirrors with no real product. Focused solely on Japan, which adds needless complexity and processes to what should be a straightforward SASS. Lack of empathy for employees. Lack of management experience. Those with experience are major micromanagers without empathy. Terrible hiring practices and even worse people management. Good food/snacks. flexible hours. unlimited time off They hire friends and families without former interviews. Too much growing pain - goals switching too rapidly. Because of the fact that leadership groups are only listen to the employees who are already their friends and families and they clearly lack in domain knowledge, they set the goals unnecessarily complicated or sometimes even irrelevant. In data scientist team, most of people are fresh out of phd program so they think their thought process is perfect (and all others are wrong) and don't ask around much. Learning and supportive environment. Lots of opportunity for learning and growth and taking ownership of parts of the stack. The engineering and data science teams are robust, and there are great technical and subject matter experts. People care a lot about the work and mission - it's more than a check in/check out culture. Still a startup so middle management is lacking. User and customer base is small but growing.
