Was a great place to work, but started drifting downhill

Generally a relaxed atmosphere, friendly employees, management seems to actually care about their team members as individuals. They continue to innovate. Teams are given the opportunity to influence processes, tools, and technologies used.
|
The print industry is shrinking, making several things harder (retaining talent, keeping sales up, providing the same benefits that made it a great place to work in the first place.)

The culture at ONYX is very comfortable. Everyone is accepting and the company encourages camaraderie through team building activities. Being a small company gives each employee the opportunity to contribute in a unique way, basically allowing you to define your job responsibilities, within the needs of your position. The benefits are competitive and there are a few interesting perks as well. Turnover is low with a number of employees having worked for over 15 years.

Wages are not very competitive and the opportunities for advancement and wage increase are minimal. Sometimes the dependency on individual contributions creates a bottleneck, inhibiting other's progress. The chain of command is not clearly defined in all departments and some people do not step up to the plate when it seems appropriate. Processes are not well defined creating inconsistencies between projects; especially marketing.

Great people mostly.
They hire hard workers when they can afford to.

Replacing experience with entry level.
Canon has money but won't spend it on keeping good personnel.
Rather outsource than give real opportunities for growth.
Almost no bonuses, puny raises if any, no reason for employee loyalty.
All Canon cares about is profit and more rules.
A "Canon Spirit Award" winner who had over 10 years experience was overworked and under paid, left shortly after winning "award".

The only pro that comes to mind is the people and friendships I made while I was there.

Toxic Environment - There is a reason that the business attire is a hazmat suit and the building is wrapped in yellow police tape with the warning sign to "Do Not Cross". Horrible management with minimal education, no room for advancement or raises, and there is a reason why the building is at a dead end street - because it is a dead end. I've watched entire departments leave their jobs because of the managers. People don't leave jobs, they leave managers. If you're looking for a company stuck in the 1980's in every way, this might be your spot. Out of date ideas, old culture, bad leadership, and old 22 lb laptop computers. And don't ever expect management to thank you for doing anything, it's a strange and backwards environment.
Cheap Culture - If you're looking for a company who spends $0.01 into their culture, this might be your jam. Their idea of culture is to have a monthly pot luck lunch catered and paid for by the employees. And if you hit record sales for the year, plan on a reward of stale cookies left in the break room - true story.

Very knowledgeable, competent employees with great opportunity to learn about all aspects of wide-format printing, friendly co-workers and good benefits for a company its size

Canon ownership limits investment in company and they control all of the big decisions instead of the senior management. Significant turnover in senior management causes vision changes.
