For young and energetic creatives, OZY promises to provide you opportunities to grow and explore your interests, hone your skills etc. You learn new skills through doing, so this is a place for people who learn and adjust quickly. If you want to take a chance to build your resume with a wide array of hands-on experience, then this is a workplace you would do well at. When I worked there, a lot of the employees were very talented and friendly. I have developed numerous connections from working there. Good health care. Where to even start. I'm still mentally getting my bearings from working at OZY after being laid off during COVID. Toxic leadership. They're manipulative and full of empty promises and take advantage of young, eager employees. The company leadership chases the next shiny thing instead of investing in what the company is good at. They use up and throw away talented folks who come to work to build up this company. Little professionalism with talent so they burned bridges there too. They threaten people, bully people etc. No emphasis on value and integrity of the content - just output content quickly and as cheaply as possible. Work was often asked of employees on nights and weekends. A lot of unspoken pressure to be online/at your desk as much as possible and to work when you were sick. No investment in making sure other employees could cover for you skill-wise/work-wise if you were out. Turnover at this place was incredibly high when I worked there. Hiring new people took ages and they often quit quickly after starting. Virtually no HR in the years I worked there. When there was an "HR" person, they were in the pocket of the C-suite, making them an unreliable person to come to for issues. Lots of gaslighting from managers who were being pressured by their leaders. A lot of the leadership/decision-makers uphold a lot of problematic belief systems and are very often close minded/reductive and not inclusive for a "new media company." They had a group of employees fill out positive reviews at the same time to make their Glassdoor rating better. If that makes you nervous, the reality is that this is just a small fraction of the lies peddled out from this place. Low pay for freelancers. Wouldn't pay freelancers in a timely manner. Would often make employees pay for work-related things up front and take a really long time to reimburse them. This was even expected for the interns/fellows. For interns/fellows or young employees you're given the narrative that they "took a chance" on you in order to get you to work harder and for low pay. So glad to have a great job at this time working with some of the best people in the game. Pros: You like good news, they are constantly having the good news blowin' at you with full force. Whether it's the guests they keep landing on the show every week or the new the good press that keeps coming - makes working fun. (leadership or the arts team, or the amazing guests we get to have EVERY week! I'm learning a TON and can't truly emphasize that enough. There's so much that this media company churns out. Frankly, somebody could convince me there wizards cause, I've not seen anything like it. From all of the people I've met in all of the departments, they have a way of making us all feel included. It's one of the most diverse organizations I've ever seen. And some of the negative chatter on this sounds weird to me. They work at such a quick pace, that if your head's not in the game - you're not able to keep up. Also, they work at such a high level that they expect you to know your stuff. If you have an allergy to learning or you're not curious, this place is DEFINITELY not for you. If you don't like very diverse environments and don't feel culturally fluent, this place may be too much, because you're not in an echo chamber. Also if you can't stand hearing opinions that are different than yours, this is NOT the place for you to be. Leadership and a clear vision/direction are lacking. It feels like there are a million cooks in the kitchen and no clear vision a lot of the time. Constant turnover and a lack of proper training keep compounding the deep-seeded issues. As a small company, OZY is able to nimbly pivot and allows employees to get hands-on experience in all aspects of media. I love that OZY partners with groundbreaking media companies and love that they are able to work in the event space, in online publishing, and in video production. Pros are smart coworkers, visionary founders, and a culture of innovation. Biyearly all-hands retreats are amazing. Also love that they hire and use stringers from around the world, and the staff is incredibly diverse and international. Staffers really admire other people's opinions, and while the workload can be intense, the work is something you should feel proud of. Like any media company, it's a challenging time. OZY can and does pivot, but there is a lot expected from employees. There is no concept of work/life balance and you can expect to receive emails and texts at all hours and on weekends. And the people who work at OZY are amazing! OZY is this way first of all because of the leadership, who are great visionaries and have grown this company in such a short amount of time. Just look at the numbers 50 Million people tuning in. The diversity, is a true asset; you have people who work at OZY from around the world. This reflects in their content which is brilliant. OZY is an environment for those with pioneering spirits who are excited to bring the audience something new and innovative. It's for people who are comfortable with diversity and diversity of view points. This is a dream job for people who are hungry, curious and passionate about impactful media. There are retreats (OZY brings us together a couple times a year), celebrity visitors, festivals (the in-person events) called OZY Fest and holiday parties -- these are awesome perks of the job. For those not used to living outside of their "bubble" or meeting deadlines, it could be a frustrating environment and something hard to get used to. And on top of this, it is a start up so I'd recommend this for people who are willing to work hard and who are able to deliver and reach the high bar that OZY sets for itself. You're really expected to pull your weight and complete your assignments by the agreed deadline. In larger companies, it's easier to hide behind a team, you can't slack off here. With things being broadcast to the world, there's not a lot of room for big mistakes -- which are caught early and may cause some people to feel like they are being micro-managed. Huge vision and talk but no execution across any departments that empower teams to actually succeed and meet goals. Micromanagement from both founders who don't hire enough people and also do not trust anyone to do their jobs. Turnover is ridiculous including key leadership positions.
