Decent co-workers depending on what department you’re in President (who was the interim and wasn’t even selected by the search committee and faculty/staff/students had no chance to give feedback) has absolutely no background in higher ed, university is in major financial crisis and has to cut academic programs and tenured faculty, inadequate academic leadership, low pay -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 1.0 1.0 3.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 129723 Open I’ve worked at PLU for more than 20 years and been through several different VPs and 3 Presidents, and the university is currently under the worst leadership of those 20 years. The current president and provost were previous PLU employees who were put in place after failed searches, so that tells you the kind of reputation that PLU has amongst the higher ed community. The VPs have no idea what it is to lead and because of that, the university is in a dire financial position and will have to cut a large number of tenured faculty and academic programs this spring. They say all of the right phrases about diversity and inclusion, but they fail at implementing it. The diversity of the university’s leadership is all white and there is very little diversity amongst the faculty and staff, especially when compared to other local universities that PLU thinks of as their peers. The fundraising is inadequate and the VP of that department has been in place for several years now with no significant fundraising achievements. If you are a potential hire for a faculty position, RUN AWAY! Unless you’re in the good graces of a select number of faculty who are in “power”, your voice will not matter. The environment amongst faculty now because of the upcoming cuts to academic programs is contentious and non collegial, which is completely due to the lack of leadership from the highest levels. A huge perk for staff: 1 week off paid in the holiday season, and 40 hours of flex time paid off in the summer (this is in addition to your vacation time). Another benefit is that many departments are open to remote/hybrid work models. Entry level and mid level jobs do not - across the board - offer a livable wage (especially for someone who is a single income earner). Unfortunately, the structure for getting a raise (merit, market or otherwise) is extremely convoluted, long, and is usually unsuccessful. You will inevitably grow professionally and gain great skills, but if you are looking to move up quickly or expand your role, the fight for the pay to back it up will be long, if not a reality. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 4.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 129723 Open Consider actionable ways to retain current talent, as well as recruit, support, and retain new diverse talent. There are many talented staff members at PLU who value the mission and their work, but cannot thrive on the minimal wage or lack of upward mobility.
