You are overworked and used until you are sick of it. Horrible pay for younger workers--not even enough to live on. New company that owns these papers can care less about their employees. Benefits are too expensive and not good.

At the time of my employment, the benefits and pay were both great. The commission structure was generous; however, after the housing market/economy crash, the commission structure changed significantly. Other benefits were training workshops, and support from upper management.

After the economy crashed, it became nearly impossible to meet monthly sales goals as well as earning commission. Also the paper itself is a dying breed and the focus shifted towards online sales. It was becoming more and more difficult to round up business

Even after years of downsizing, the paper still has its share of talented reporters and editors. Given time and resources, they're capable of producing very good work; unfortunately, they're overworked and beaten down. Among South Florida's three large newspapers, the newsroom is easily the most congenial.
|
Bloated, overpaid upper and middle management. Most of these folks are the publisher's longtime buddies and will enjoy protected status as long as he's there. Used to be one of the country's best newspapers of its size; now it's hardly even relevant. Based on the new owner's history, more downsizing is on the way sooner rather than later.
