Really was mislead my management
|
|
The technology seemed to be strong
|
Management mislead me regarding just about everything. They changed their entire attitude when they failed to acquire. Made financial promises that were not honored, were ageist and there was a bit of religious tension.

The Best Place I Coulda Landed At
|
|
You know how a job is supposed to be a grind? And how American Life is supposed to = only living/having fun on the weekends? And how at most jobs you're a cog that can be easily replaced and thrown out?
Panopta's not like that.
Your contributions matter...and actually shape the company's direction. You like collaboration? Like the "Hey, we wanna hear your ideas, and oh, by the way, we'll actually implement them" kind? Then this is the company for you.
I'm typically an independent nomad. Somebody who likes to be in charge of his own live, a non-corporate guy, one who stays at a job until it's convenient and time to move on, then uses that position as a "stepping stone" to get to something better.
Not this time. Now I'm in it for the long haul.
On my first day here, we sat down and talked for an hour+ about what I wanted to do at Panopta, years down the road. On my first day.
I can confidently say that everything we talked about actually happened...and more (and how rare is that?). My position transitioned into what we chatted about in 2018.
Scratch that. It's even better. I didn't know exactly what the above was, but they created it for me. I didn't even think people like this existed: owners and leaders who actually want to see people develop into something more than what they started as. And I've never worked for a company where I fiercely defend its people like I do here. I just like 'em that much.
Also:
-- I'm remote. And I've never felt this connected to a group of people, some whom I've never met in person (we're growing that fast!).
-- They believe in your development (see above). Not only was I granted hours each week for career learnin', Panopta also paid for the tests themselves.
-- Panopta culture is the best. You can be you. Nobody expects you to be anything else -- except there's one guy they make wear a polo shirt. Actually he makes himself wear one, because he got a promotion or something (see above). So we laugh about it together every week.
-- You'll be treated more fairly here any any job you've ever had. Promise.
|
Panopta's agile. That in itself isn't a con, but if you're an order-taker, or someone who likes to see the same thing day in and day out, this company isn't for you.
I will say, with a growing family, if there's an upgrade to our benefits in the near future (which I've heard rumors there are!), that'd be awesome for us. Definitely a nice-to-have.

A great team in a hardworking environment
|
|
This is a group of talented, hardworking folks who are extremely smart, resourceful and collaborative. When I first came onboard, I had no idea what to expect from this small company of nerds. Over a year later, I can say I learn something new every single day - whether if that means technical skills, knowledge for the many hats I get to wear, or my personal journey. I'm grateful for the autonomy and trust this company has shown me. Thank you to my peers and senior leadership at Panopta for the good vibes and always having my back.
|
We are often heads down, and laser focused on our tasks. Everyone is very much in it together and someone will always offer help, however there can be challenges. The day-to-day is a tightrope walk of being both proactive and reactive - at least in my particular position.

Thank you for keeping it real, being transparent to the whole team, and always handling tough times with such a classy attitude (especially during the impact of COVID-19). We're all doing our best to not get burnt out, so I'm excited to see the many opportunities for positive changes as we grow. With that said, please never lose the best parts of being apart of this small company!

Good people with realistic expectations
|
|
Great Salary.
Good PTO.
Excellent self-care and work/life balance options.
Amazing workplace culture where people respect each other - definitely a community.
Management is very realistic in work/life balance - if I have to drop what I am doing to go pick up my sick kid at school, people jump in to cover for me and vice versa.
Very open to new ideas and constant feedback - I am free to walk up to anyone else in the company and discuss any improvement area or other idea I have, from the CEO to UI Design and everyone in between.
Remote work is available for some positions.
Some opportunity to learn new tech / new things in general.
|
Remote work is more available for some positions than others, sometimes makes it feel like you need an "excuse" to work from home (note: this could just be my PTSD from a previous work experience, so take it with a grain of salt!)
Often too busy to learn new things - need to actually make sure to schedule it in your calendar.
Open - concept office. It isn't particularly noisy but I tend to work with my headphones on when I need to concentrate.
Pretty sure the office thermostat is controlled by a broken magic 8-ball.

Best job and boss I've ever had
|
|
I've been in IT sales for over 6 years now both as an SDR, an AE, and a manager. Most of that time I've absolutely hated my job. Salespeople get a bad rap - but it’s because a good number of us act like stereotypical salespeople. We bully, we lie, we push, we don’t care about others.
That’s the part of sales I hate. And that's why I love it so much at Panopta. That culture and behavior is absolutely not allowed and I think it's a key part of our success. I don't have to try to "get along" in a culture I don't enjoy here because everyone is free to be a different type of salesperson.
We just found out our comp plan is getting MUCH friendlier. And our sales director said, “hey, I haven’t really heard any complaints about the old plan. I want you all to know you can come to me with negative things and I'll do my best to fix the issue."
His concern was that we were afraid to be honest and afraid to speak truth to power.
When is the last time you had a sales leader honestly want negative feedback? That's why I love Panopta. Part of the annual review process here is an employee giving anonymous feedback about their manager - and that feedback is actually appreciated and acted upon.
My first day of training in Chicago (I work remotely) the CEO, Jason, was the last person to leave the office - and he went around turning off the lights. Later on he had to come into the office late (which is something everyone does from time-to-time) and he posted in Slack just like anyone else. There's a true sense of accountability and honesty here. I've never worked somewhere where the CEO plays by the same rules as the new sales guy - but that's, again, why I love Panopta so much.
The company is still really small - but I don't think it will be for much longer - but I don't think the way Jason and Shabbir and Cory and Sarah and Robert and all the Marks work will change. These are good people who believe in their work and enjoy being with each other. I can't express how wonderful it is to be a part of that.
|
Being remote has a ton of positives but it can get a bit lonely. And I wish they'd buy me a standing desk.

I know we want to grow and it's inevitable - but please don't lose what makes this place so wonderful. Don't ever stop ONLY hiring the best person who is perfect for the role rather than the best one you can get in a set amount of time.
And maybe buy me a standing desk.

Pleasant place to work with a great culture
|
|
To me, our biggest pros come from our smaller company size. Things such as weekly one on one meetings with supervisors, weekly dev retro meetings, and monthly company retro meetings help keep everyone on the same page when it comes to product, marketing, and sales updates.
The culture is definitely a top reason to work here . Everyone here is respectful and actually cares about one another which makes it a joy to come in every morning. This alongside everyone’s hardworking spirit are just a few things that make Panopta a great place to work.
|
The only con that comes to mind is that the workload can spike from time to time, but with this being said, it’s always manageable.

Best team, best culture.
|
|
The entire team, from individual contributors to managers and the leadership team, is laser-focused on helping the company move forward. Combine that with a commitment to transparency, continued education and development, and shared responsibility, its the recipe for a great culture and a great place to work.
|
From where I stand, there really aren't any. That being said, if you're not used to working in a fast-paced environment, Panopta is likely not a good fit.

Great place.
|
|
A startup with a great culture where the work you do as an engineer really has an impact on the output of the customer. Is a challenging environment where you need to expand and engage in a wide range of difficult problems with a fast turnout rate.
The culture is great and the teamplay is tight and collaborative, you never feel bad for asking a question or having difficulty with an assignment, and most of the time you will be left to use your own design and use your own approach to solve your work, with a bit of guidance and peer review/design.
Off the work relations are pretty good and the team is encouraged and given opportunities to socialize after work which is a huge plus. Also having a nice work/life balance is encouraged which is pretty good.
|
Due to the nature of the product its need to support legacy code so while you do get to use pretty advanced code there can be situations when you're constrained by the requirements to make it work under certain conditions.

Highly Satisfying Work and Focused, Friendly Environment
|
|
- The culture is awesome. You can immediately tell that everyone is very much in this together. Everyone just 'gets it'. Almost everyone here is a serious techie and highly diversified in their field, there is constant knowledge sharing between coworkers
- There is never a dull moment, there are always new and interesting projects and challenges
- You constantly come in contact with new and exciting tech, there is always huge potential to experiment and improve
- If you don't like how something works or have a good idea on how to improve any area of the company, management legitimately listens. It's extremely empowering to know that you have the ability to change things for the better
|
- The environment is fast paced and the workload can be high at times but those occurrences are few and far between
- You're allowed to take full control of most projects so if you feel the need to be closely managed, you might not have a good time
