Great Reaction to COVID-19

Panopto has always been an amazing company to work for, however, I would like to highlight how amazing our Executive team has been through the pandemic. Myself and most of the other AE’s are remote but the majority of our other co-workers are in the office. Over the last 6-weeks our CEO has been holding CEO office hours twice a week via Zoom. It is a time for all of us to gather virtually, chat, laugh, and catch-up. Our executive team continues to reiterate how important our safety is and making sure every employee and their family is safe. We have always been a close family at Panopto, but we are just a little bit closer now, particularly due to how we and our Executive team is always looking out for each other.

Cool location (Smith tower), snacks in the kitchen were great, comp was decent.

- No orca passport card
- There's no process whatsoever for software development, documentation, release management, agile best practices, etc.
- There's no investment in onboarding, documentation, coaching, career-development or ramp-up at all.
- People felt incredibly aloof and unwelcoming during my time there. All the existing employees were cliquish.
- I felt micromanaged the whole time I was there by my manager and C-level execs in the company.
- No decentralized decision making was disempowering and the low bus-factor meant that if people were sick or on vacation, work ground to a halt. As an example, the VP of engineering was out sick for a week, and so many meetings needed to be postponed because he needed to be in the room.
- Ultimately, I was let go with severance because they realized they 'wanted someone at a Director or VP level rather than at an IC level'.

Working at Panopto was the most stressful and hellacious experience of my life. There were moments of growth, but they were definitely overshadowed by not feeling any support whatsoever. I get the whole "toss em in the deep end" or "drink from the firehose" start-up mentality, but Panopto has been around long enough where that excuse shouldn't fly.
Invest in slowing down feature development to fix your fundamentals like better processes, documentation, and onboarding for new employees. And treat your new people better; it's not that hard.

I enjoy almost every day on the job at Panopto and am excited about helping educators and corporate trainers improve outcomes with video. The people at Panopto are smart and friendly, and the culture is laid back but serious about results and helping our customers. The company size is a nice balance in that we are established and have ~150 employees, yet there is still a startup feel and ideas are welcome from all levels of the organization. There are many exciting initiatives underway and most within the organization have a growth mindset, so the future looks bright. Lastly, they have done a great job of recruiting and retaining top talent through highly competitive pay and benefits.

Dysfunctional Organization - Don't Make The Same Mistake I Made

- Nice downtown office
- Growing Technology in a Niche industry

- Non-existent training program and a horrible onboarding process (4 Week training program condensed into a spreadsheet that is easily completed in 2 days)
- On Day One, I was told by leadership "they are terrible at onboarding new sales employees and the sales leadership absolutely hates it". It was admitted to me that there was “no real process in place to train anyone and I was asked to "just get through it" (wink/wink-hush/hush).
- Sales management team NEVER took accountability for anything. There is a glaring disconnect between the sales department and the other departments.
- The ONLY explanation and guidance was a bunch of apologies for all of the chaos. To make things even worse, the blame was constantly pointed towards others, particularly upper management.
- The excuses were always focused on the ineffectiveness of others to have unified voice when it came to training the new hires. Needless to say, communication between departments is terrible.
- Every day I kept telling myself it couldn’t get worse, and I was genuinely surprised that it always did.
- Anyone considering a sales position with this company NEEDS to do their homework very carefully and not get hoodwinked (as I did). They do a marvelous job of presenting the company (during the interview process) as being ethical and second to none. This is definitely not reality.
- I should have seen the signs in the beginning BUT chose to give this company the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, I chose wrong! But lesson learned.
- I want to thank this Company for teaching me what I hate in a company.

- If you want to sell yourself as an ETHICAL company, then follow Rule #1: Treat your Employees like human beings.
- Talk to your employees like they are people, instead of blindsiding them with no consideration for their well-being and their professional careers.
- If you want your business to survive and succeed, you need to realize that the people leading the sales team are taking you in the wrong direction!
- The sales team itself is great, but the leadership is terrible and not trustworthy at all. The executive team really needs to get control of how the sales team is being guided and managed. It’s much more than just looking at the numbers!
- It would make sense to have leadership that concentrates on implementing a cohesive plan to ensure your new sales executives are set up for success. Blaming others and mocking colleagues for silly things such as having “Panopto” personalized license plates is doing the company a huge disservice!
- This is by no means "sour grapes" (trust me, I've moved on), but if you don't believe me, then conduct an anonymous survey of your sales team and hear it for yourself.

Even as a remote employee I still feel connected to my co-workers. Panopto will challenge you every day, but the leadership is always behind you and there is a ton of resources available to you.

Sometimes things can seem a little "spur-of-the-moment" however, that is life with a software company.
