Terrible Company - Incredibly Abusive Owner
|

The product was good, but it was based on old technology and is now dying a slow death.
|
This is an extremely abusive work environment. The owner publicly screams at, belittles and berates employees, most of the time in front of the entire company --on a daily basis. By all accounts, he enjoys it. There is no sales and marketing anymore - they all left. Raises and bonuses are non-existent, and health benefits got worse every year. The owner doesn't care about his employees at all.

Extremely Hostile Work Environment - Bullying Owner
|
|
Co-workers were all great people who were fun to work with and very talented and supported each other in the horrible work environment.
The CommonSpot product had a lot of potential had the company not been so poorly managed.
|
The owner of the company is in a constant state of barely contained seething rage and actively seeks out any employee on which he can unleash. Not a difficult boss situation but way beyond that to actually downright abusive.
No career advancement opportunities. No pay raises. Benefits change to different medical insurance provider annually depending on who is cheaper and coverage expensive and not great.
Pay well below industry standards.
Nobody is doing sales or marketing (everyone left) and business suffers which fuels the hostile environment.

Don't manage. Don't interact with employees. Hire a competent and experienced manager and focus your attention instead on product development. Diversify by adding new products to increase size of potential customer base. Hire full-time sales and full-time marketing people who can focus on growing the business revenue.

Great people to work with that are incredibly dedicated, are sincerely invested in seeing the company succeed and are willing to help in any way.
|
Management rules through intimidation, in particular, the owner who will often lose his temper and yell at you in front of your peers. It's very demoralizing to work there.

Treat your employees with respect and give their opinions some consideration since they are the ones talking to prospects and customers, and not you. Empower people to do their job and make decisions, and support them in their efforts. Don't try to micromanage everything, as have smart people working for you that are invested and only want the best for the company.

There are some great people who work there and are supportive of one another when the boss is bullying and humiliating someone.
|
The rate of customer attrition is rapid. Poor sales, that are not due to Reps efforts.
The owner chooses to bully and humiliate his employees in front of other staff. Staff are leaving due to rants, poor leadership, and volatility. There is a total lack of respect for employees. resulting in staff compliance without respect for the boss. Staff are not validated or valued.
Training and support are lacking to non existent. Leadership and encouragement are also non existent.

The CommonSpot product is pretty cool, and I enjoyed the company of almost everyone at PaperThin.
|
The owner is an extreme micro manager. He calls people who are sick, keeping them on the phone for hours to make sure they are still doing as much work as they possibly can while sick. He sets arbitrary deadlines months too early, so that everyone is perpetually working in a high-stress "eleventh hour" crunch mode. He yells at someone (could be anyone) once a day on average, loud enough for everyone in the office to hear. Compensation is mediocre.

There were always new challenges coming, with an interesting system in place that enables those challenges to be completed.

The pay is well below industry average, and raises are unheard of. The work is in an older technology, which is not necessarily a con, but something to consider.
