Awful management from family company
|
Actual function of research jobs is fairly interesting because of topic, but company is operational disaster. Salary is fair but benefits like healthcare are awful.
Management is either completely disinterested in your development or downright disrespectful. President and CEO who founded the company think everyone lives to serve them and frequently abandon company for personal agenda, but are very inflexible with employees. Getting yelled at in front of the entire company is a frequent occurrence. Complete lack of trust between management and employees.
Operations are completely disorganized and management is really attached to legacy technology and processes that slow down the company and cause delays. However, rather than change the process, they blame employees.
Every non-management employee knows culture is bad, but accepts it because it is either their first real job, or there are not similar opportunities available in DFW. Truly awful company to work for.

Wonderful proving ground for a young analyst - became more stressful as I advanced
|
Parks Associates gave me terrific opportunities to grow into the position of an industry analyst. As a small company, there is ample opportunity for advancement and the ability to help grow the company by choosing new areas of research. I was able to travel to many different places domestically and internationally, many of which I would have never been to had it not been for the job. There is no shortage of promotion at the company, as I published more than 120 studies and spoke at many industry events. It is a terrific place to build credentials, expertise, and a CV!
As a family owned and operated business (and like any small business), there was also plenty of stress. We were always mindful of month-to-month sales, cash flow, and deadlines. We were under pressure to create good quality syndicated research while the sales staff was very effective in selling custom research. This often created tension between the scheduled research and the custom. I felt that the research staff sometimes did not get enough input into the proposals that went to custom clients, and we often felt immense pressure to deliver research that was exceedingly difficult if not impossible to ascertain (for example, the revenues of private companies, number of products sold, etc.).
The bottom line is that Parks Associates gave me wonderful opportunities to become an expert in the consumer electronics industry. As I married and started a family, the pressures of family life did not balance with the demands that the job created. I also wanted a change from conducting supply-side research to working within a company to provide market intelligence. One shortcoming of the supply side of market research is that you rarely get to the see the end result of the work that you've conducted. I'd like to be part of a team that sees a project through from beginning to end and is able to witness the success of that work directly.

Great learning experience, wide travel opportunities, quick recognition as an industry expert, lots of publications to pad resume, ability to create new research practices
|
Small company stresses, sometimes disorganized HR and other policies, tension between sales and research, immense deadline pressure
