tl;dr - There used to be plenty but there are none anymore.
I worked at PLM for almost 4 years. In the beginning, I LOVED working for this company. It had a great mission and heart. Most employees worked there because they truly wanted to make a difference. I worked with some of the best engineers I have ever known who were also extremely welcoming and wonderful mentors/teachers. I grew immensely as an engineer from working with this team in the first 2 years. It was also a fun place to work with weekly "Lunch and Learns" and a great camaraderie.

tl;dr - New management has no business plan, does not listen to feedback, has lost sight of the mission, over-promises to sell contracts, and has resorted to writing fake reviews on GlassDoor
Unfortunately, after a rough year in 2019, we ended up with completely new management and culture in 2020. There was no direction, business plan or transparency with goals and projects changing weekly. Leadership is extremely incompetent. We lost our focus of helping patients and started trying anything and everything to make money by promising things we could not deliver in order to sell contracts. The CEO consistently micro-managed designs and features and leadership was incapable of receiving input on new projects. Multiple projects were pushed forward after horrible user feedback as well as pushback from product and engineering. It got to a point where first management just ignored engineering input/feedback and then ultimately cut them out of the planning process altogether. This is when the steady attrition rate (which was already kind of high) skyrocketed as leadership seemed to be intentionally pushing out experienced engineers in order to bulk hire cheap entry level ones without much vetting. It was extremely sad to watch this once wonderful company devolve into what it is today.
It has also come to my attention that management has been writing fake reviews disparaging "legacy engineers" as a way to undermine an onslaught of bad reviews (I assume) which is extremely upsetting to me because, like I said, those were some of the best and smartest engineers I have known and I learned and grew tremendously from working with them.
Note on my compensation rating: My compensation was more or less competitive but that is because I locked in a raise before the new management took over and closed the purse strings. Compensation packages being offered to new employees is not competitive.

LISTEN to your employees' and patients' feedback and adjust accordingly. Do not expect to be able to build/deliver good software with no experienced engineers. Invest in re-building the culture or no one will stick around very long.

The people. From interns to the previous leadership team, they were incredible, smart, and driven. They cared about the patients, respected each other, and made each other better. Sadly, current leadership has driven these people out and with them all of their institutional knowledge.

Everyone who joined PatientsLikeMe wanted to join a fast pace start up with a mission they believed in. The pace was not fast and exciting but rather confusing and unstructured.
Projects are not based on what makes sense for the company but what will get them quick money or what leadership feels like doing in that moment.
Changes to the platform used to be made to help the patient but that isn't the case anymore. There is no UX team and no one asks the patients what will actually help them.
Current leadership has no idea what they are doing. They are not transparent with employees, patients, or clients and continue to misrepresent actual stats about the company. They will not listen or take advice from employees and all decisions are made top down. If you push back, provide advice, or ask for clarification you'll probably be looking for a new job.
The PatientsLikeMe patient community is no longer cared for in the way they used to be and it shows with the number of active users.
With the pace that people are leaving you will be forced to take on more work without a title charge or pay increase.
Culture is nonexistent.

Where to begin?
Nobody in upper management has any business being running a tech company, the attrition rate in engineering is through the roof, people with dissenting opinions are either quarantined from the rest of the company or fired, and management absolutely cannot be trusted.
The company was once focused on patients, now the focus is on health insurance and pharmaceutical companies. This is likely a result of their acquisition.
It seems also that the company has been impersonating engineers on this site to post good reviews, which is a rather sad indication of their priorities.

New management is terrible

None anymore. The company has lost all sense of direction and culture from where it was a couple of years ago.
|
New management took over PatientsLikeMe earlier this year as a result of an acquisition (after 2 other acquisitions in the prior couple of years). There is not a clear direction for projects, there is not a clear sense of team structure, and the attrition rate is extremely high. Despite the company being around for over a decade, the average tenure of an engineer is approximately 2 months. Most other departments have similar attrition/retention rates. For example, 2/3 of product management is less than 2 months old.
Everybody who has been at the company for any length of time is actively looking for new jobs, and no efforts are being made at all to adjust culture, retain old employees, or maintain and transfer institutional knowledge. After I gave notice and offered assistance in transitioning, I had exactly 0 communications with anyone in management short of a brief exit interview.
The COO, who is the son of the primary investor, has neither management experience nor engineering experience, and his effectiveness is questionable.
We briefly had a glimmer of hope in October when the interim CEO was replaced with a new CEO who saw the problems and had concrete plans to address them. This new CEO was widely liked and seemed to be doing all the right things to turn the culture/business around. Unfortunately he did not last due to internal politics. He was fired after just a week and a half and the original interim CEO was put back in place. Several people have left the company since that has happened.
Sales staff are encouraged to inflate or misrepresent facts and statistics about the company in order to sign deals, and essentially all metrics have been on a constant and steady decline since new management took over.
The level of mismanagement and lack of oversight on projects is egregious.
