In reality the company is focused on superficiality: looks, status, power. Lots of toxic people here. Passive-aggressive managers that are incapable of having honest and direct interactions with their employees. Concocted situations and tactics to "get under your skin", "prove a point", or manipulate you. private:perkins&co https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=147739 Oct 29th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Perkins & Co Audit Staff Corporate culture of negativity -There are a lot of really great co-workers -The company hosts fun events (pre-Covid-19) -The pay is competitive with the market Unfortunately, there are many negative aspects about working at Perkins. -There seems to be a disconnect/lack of communication between management and the employees. Communication about job performance is inconsistent and staff input is non-existent. In my personal experience, I regularly wasn't given job feedback until a few months later. -Perkins claims to have a great work-life-balance, but they still expect you to make work the first priority in your life. -Many of the managers at Perkins fail to direct the new staff during engagements. This hands-off approach leads to mistakes and communication issues, which are blamed on the new staff. -No avenues/channels to share feedback about managers if you are part of the staff. -The advisor/mentee program is not focused on helping employees grow professionally. It's more about reading off the coaching forms to you and picking out the negative aspects. -If you're not a favorite of the managers, you won't be scheduled on many engagements. Thus, you won't have the same opportunities/experience as others at your same level. In my experience, I was not scheduled on anything for a few weeks. I was concerned when I saw that my co-workers at my same level were scheduled for 300+ hours and I had no hours. When I reached out about my schedule, I was told that management knew about the availability in my schedule, but nothing came of my inquiry. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 5.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 3.0 1.0 147739 Open -Be sure to value the input of the staff and provide avenues for feedback about managers (without the risk of retaliation). Staff input is a valuable part of providing a positive work environment for staff and managers alike. -Job feedback should be given while on an engagement not months later. This would allow employees to improve before coaching forms are written up (which influence your annual review). Managers need to be more open about issues during engagements. Talk to your staff if you see issues with workpapers or communication. This would be a more positive experience than getting a coaching form months later that describes what you did wrong. -New staff should not be heavily criticized for making mistakes while on new engagements. There are no prior year workpapers on new engagements or anything to follow, which is difficult for inexperienced staff. -Review the advisor/mentee program to make employees feel more supported/valued. Mentors should be encouraging and help employees with career development. Help employees grow professionally and don't abandon them if they make mistakes. 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "HR Manager", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 2886012, "responseDateTime": "2020-12-04T14:12:39.05", "translationMethod": null, "response": "Thank you for your feedback. We are aware that communication and guidance have been a challenge, and the sudden change to remote work compounded the issue. Since the beginning of the pandemic, additional focus has been placed on checking in with employees. I am sorry to hear that you did not feel as though you received the guidance and support you needed from your advisor as those are both key focus areas of the IGNITE Talent Development program. Employees are encouraged to provide feedback on those they work with throughout the year, as well as during the formal upward feedback process the firm conducts in December/January.\n\nChanges to the performance management process have been in development for the past few months and I am happy to announce that those changes are currently being introduced to the Audit department. The new process includes monthly performance check-ins that take a look at the past 30-days so that goals and objectives can be set for the upcoming 30-days. By conducting more routine and scheduled conversations, feedback should be delivered more timely. This is intended to be a more interactive process between the employee and their Advisor. At Perkins, we believe that employees must share in the responsibility of their professional development and career advancement to truly be successful in their chosen career.", "responseOriginal": null, "countNotHelpful": 0}] REGULAR No No 1.0 Mar 31st, 2021 10:03PM Mar 31st, 2021 10:03PM Perkins & Co

It is definitely a unique accounting firm. The Manifesto and Purpose & Values on the company website are unlike anything I've seen elsewhere in public accounting. Having worked here for a while, I can say it is an accurate depiction of the company and people. It seems the compensation info on Glassdoor is not current. The offer I received was very competitive and well above my expectation, which was based upon the ranges listed here. private:perkins&co https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=147739 Nov 9th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Perkins & Co Auditor Portland, OR Generally awesome place to work, some of the same struggles that many public accounting firms have Perkins is an awesome place to work. - It is a very close-knit and collaborative team atmosphere- you will never have to deal with politics and never have to worry about your peers backstabbing to climb past you. - We are generally all friends, all care about the team’s success, all interested in making positive changes, all high performing, all want to grow and better ourselves, and Perkins as an employer supports all of that. - The shareholder group is supportive of individual goals, interests, and career goals and are extremely accessible to all levels. - The culture is fun and vibrant and evolves constantly as new people join and add to it. We spend a lot of time just having fun and there is never a dull moment. - There is a clear path for growth and everyone involved wants everyone to succeed. There is constant mentorship, coaching, and feedback and individual goals are taken directly into consideration as part of that. - There is strong support for giving back to the community. Whether through board service, our annual ‘Day of Giving’, our holiday food drive, philanthropy via not-for-profit sponsorship and giving, and more, an emphasis is placed on being key contributors to Portland in more than just our key services. - Perkins occupies the sweet spot in terms of size and client base. We are not so big that new staff are siloed into one area allowing everyone to learn and grow very quickly with a diverse set of skills and base of knowledge - within your first year you are already touching many pieces of an audit, and experiencing several jobs. Meanwhile, we are not so small that we are missing out on complex accounting issues and just babysitting clients all of the time. This is all capped off by our membership in the BDO Alliance which provides great access to tons of resources like their audit software and methodology, technical resources, support for clients with out of town components so we don’t have to constantly travel, great training, etc. It is really a perfect spot in my eye. Perkins can suffer from many of the normal ‘Public Accounting’ shortfalls. - We work a lot of hours and there can be a lot of pressure to make the job your number one priority over personal, mental, and familial health - the old adage of live-to-work vs. work-to-live. - There is often a disconnect between the benefits in the Audit department and the Tax department - a big piece of this is extra time off. One department is rewarded extra hours off during the summer for working extra hours during busy season and the other is not - despite individuals in both departments working over the ‘55-busy-season-minimum’ at times. This can feel inequitable at times. The auditors often joke that they are ‘auditors at a tax firm’ - not a key and equally valued component. - There is little transparency in pay equity. None of us ever know where we line up or how pay is determined. At times, new hires may make more or the same as experienced staff (which may be industry standard, not sure) communicating to those with experience that they are only as valuable or less valuable than someone with no experience. Nobody is complaining about wages overall as we are on par with industry norms, but it is an equity thing, a way that worth is communicated. - It can work out that Seniors and sometimes experienced staff are doing their own jobs AND the jobs of the positions above them at the same time and for years while only being paid and recognized for their own jobs. This is in part driven by turnover (a public accounting problem), but does suck sometimes. It does help your grow quickly but it can lead to burnout. - While pay is good, our benefits kind of stink. I believe our 401k plan is fairly standard when looking at larger firms but that doesn’t make it good. Our health insurance is crazy expensive if you want your family on it - just not feasible at all. It is free for the employee but if you aren’t single with no kids you are going to pay a lot of money. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 4.0 2.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 147739 Open - Keep striving to be different than other accounting firms. Instead of aiming to be on par with all of the many industry norms, seek to create better ones. We don’t have to subscribe to other firms’ paths and can create our own better one. - Keep valuing the input of staff as they are your future and their perspectives matter. Keeping them around for the long term is the only way we become the best. Retention had to be a number one priority and responding to the needs of a new generation will ensure that happens. 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "HR Manager", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 2412360, "responseDateTime": "2019-11-15T17:56:39.167", "translationMethod": null, "response": "I would like to start by saying thank you for the very thoughtful and considerate review. It is obvious that you really care deeply about Perkins and the people you work with. Please know that your comments have been heard.\nYou should plan to attend the upcoming Audit Staff & Senior Town Hall session where the busy season bonus and flex-time programs will be discussed in depth. This is also a topic that has been brought up by your Leadership Council, so I would recommend you speak directly with your team representative about specific questions you have in regards to either of these programs. The Leadership Council members are a great resource for discussing Firm policy and procedure.\nPerkin's leadership has been working diligently to improve pay transparency and we will continue to implement new practices to make compensation and bonus decisions clearer for everyone. Revising practices does not move as quickly as we would like, but significant strides have already been made and there are more to come.\nAs we strive to embrace the one firm culture we value so much at Perkins, silos continue to be broken down allowing us all to work together.
