Supportive: As mentioned in the headline, PetRelocation is by far the most supportive work environment I have ever worked in. Even as this local business grows, it still feels like real people working for real people. Every employee matters and they do not see anyone as easily disposable like a lot of workplaces. Even the CEO makes extra effort to show everyone they are important by having 1:1 meetings with each employee regularly. Interview Process: Although this is mentioned as a con for a lot of people, I would like to point out the pro to this process. It shows that PetRelocation wants to hire the RIGHT people. Taking you through such a long journey to start off shows that they are wanting to truly invest in the people they hire. Flexible Schedule and WFH: This is not a traditional 9-5 job. This means sometimes really early mornings, or even overnight work. I find this all as a con as I like having a job that trusts it's employees to come in and get work done without strict clock-in rules. Management knows that they have hired the right kind of productive people, so they have no doubts that they are getting their work done. This means if you worked an overnight move - you are not expected to be at your desk bright and early the next day. You come in after you have had some rest, and on some occasions you can just work from home on that day if needed. WFH is great, and it really helps you have a realistic life schedule. Traffic is insane, illness come around, and we all have appointments on weekdays we can't avoid scheduling. Why take a whole personal day when you can work from home around these life events? Open PTO: There is no judgement around understanding everyone needs a break and their open PTO policy actually encourages employees to take time for themselves. Studies find that you have more productive employees with this sort of atmosphere, and at PetRelo it SHOWS Health Benefits: Not only are the benefits great, but they are actually really fun with PetRelocation. This means in office fitness challenges, group activities, and lunch and learns. There is an awesome point system in the health care that allows you to save up for discounts and even awesome swag. The coolest thing that PetRelo has done so far is when they were told they were getting a discount on Health Insurance as a company, they didn't even hesitate to decide to put that money back to the people. - I actually am not on the insurance yet but I actually can't wait to switch over! Culture: The office culture is SO amazing. Employees support and guide one another, management is always checking in, and it is such a fun and positive place to be. I look forward to seeing and hearing from my coworkers everyday. It is still a newer developing company that is trying to figure out what will work best as they grow. Super supportive management team that works so hard to make our day to day balanced so we can have time for our family and ourselves too. I also want to mention that this office knows how to have fun. Love the team events we have. The work is really a good fit for me. There is an opportunity to work with some awesome pet parents and you get to work with people all around the world and learn about international government relations. You can bring your dog or cat into the office to work with you! Unlimited PTO! Booming company with a steady and healthy growth. Lots of opportunity It's not a traditional 8-5 job, there will be times that you will need to check computer in the evening and talk with clients due to time zones or if anything should pop up during a pet move, but I don't mind this at all, but want to share for those interested. :) At the same time, the management team is flexible and supports a flexible schedule. Easy to balance life with work and ultimately feels more productive for everyone. The company culture is like nothing I've ever been a part of. Management genuinely cares about each person on staff and their individual accomplishments and challenges. I feel lucky to have not just coworkers, but a work family to collaborate and grow with as I work toward advancing my career in the years ahead. PetRelocation is a pioneer in the pet travel industry, and I look forward to being a part of the journey to improve the experiences of pet owners and their loved ones across the world. The only con would be the inherent nature of a small company role, which can sometimes have you wearing a lot of hats at once. If you're not proactive and organized this can be a con. But there is a lot of support, and performance and work life balance expectations are realistic, Which really removes this from the con pile, but if I had to list one that would be it. If you can step back and realize there is no blueprint for a company like this with such unique challenges to be successful, it helps keep things in perspective. Management recognizes the value of the experience that only comes from selling and shipping pet moves firsthand, which is why the CEO continuously involves the entire staff on changes and new directions. Transparency is extremely important here and I think the administrative staff does their best to live by that. All the growth opportunity may not be obvious with posted job openings and such, but if you find a need within the company and propose a solution you’re willing to carry out, you will likely open up your own path to success. Passion for making things better as a whole is rewarded here. In a new industry like this, change is around every corner. Sometimes changes seem to happen “just because”, so it helps to be curious and try to learn "where the changes come from and why" to better adopt them. If you want to walk into a job that is black and white, where you don’t have to use critical thinking skills on an hourly basis – this is not a job for you. If problem solving is something that you find very fulfilling, you will excel here. Also, since this is a relatively small and new company, policies are often developed when the need arises rather than already having them all in place. If you’re coming from a larger corporation that has a rock solid work from home policy, multiple departments to handle all your issues, and a clear chain of command that everyone abides by, it may be a bit of an adjustment to be flexible and patient as this company grows and puts these things in place. Health insurance for employees is great, but expensive for additional dependents. Work/life balance is constantly improving, but working directly with pet owners during a move can be stressful. The company has made and is making major strides to better manage people's workloads and bring in help where needed for unexpected pet travel issues. It quickly sets in that this is a serious business of constant problem-solving... and I do mean constant. The sales consultants and relocation coordinators work hard and they work many hours. For the most part, they get to enjoy their evenings and weekends, but this is not an 8-5 job. It has taken the company a while to build out a strong, supportive infrastructure and for that we have lost some very good employees. • While the company has taken efforts to create career paths for its employees, it is still a small company and growth potential is limited. • We do not have a 401K plan (I do not particularly find this to be a strike against the company, but I know it is important to many people). • Just as the company's purpose is unique, so is the stress. It took me years to realize that regardless of where I worked, I would have stress. Because we work so closely with pet owners, the stress can often feel intensified. In the past people have felt isolated in that stress and left the company. There is a lot of autonomy in how you handle your day-to-day, while also defining the process for those who follow you. Looking back, it feels great to know you were a part of driving change and that you had a seat at the table to plan the company strategy. The CEO’s door is always open for those with ideas and the ability to execute on those ideas. The people you work with are some of the most passionate people you’ll ever come across - they truly care about what they do and try to find the best way to support each other and the company. The owners are included in this - they are good people and are always looking for new ways to involve employees in the company’s structure and growth. I always said, “we’re just a bunch of weirdos, who happen to move pets” and I think that’s the best way to describe the culture. The amount of innovation and changes can be intimidating to some, but I always found it to be intriguing and challenging in the right way. Things move fast and change around a bit, but it’s all with the intention of finding the best way to manage the employee experience without losing sight of the client experience. PetRelocation is an industry leader because the CEO and employees are growing more efficient, learning new skill sets, and focusing on what everyone is there for - the pets. Even though some reviews previously claimed there is no career growth, it is there for those who reach for the opportunity when presented. A path isn’t defined - you have to define it for yourself. I moved to at least 5 different positions (upwards) within the company and built new skill sets each time. While seeing cute pet pictures daily, building relationships with a bunch of pet-lovers (clients, agents, and employees), attending company happy hours and events, having free downtown parking on the weekends, and having dogs in the office were all great, the things I mentioned previously are what really mattered to me most in my career at PetRelocation. As someone mentioned, it is an emotional job. Clients are typically high-profile and some are extremely demanding. Also, a good portion of the production roles - sales and shipping - is not in your control, making it stressful at times. Airlines and agents will mess up and you have to be ready to bounce back in spite of this to keep the client happy. This job is not for those needing a corporate structure to tell them their next move or for someone needing constant reassurance in their abilities and value. Those people tend to be the most frustrated because they don’t have the thick skin, self-assurance, and security to pull themselves out of stressful moments. Instead, they generally try to bring others down with them to validate their emotions which is frustrating to see in such an empathetic culture. Also, I’ve seen people burn out because of how much time and energy they devote to the job, when it’s up to them to take a step back and set their own boundaries - the company supports this more than ever now with flex hours and opportunities to work from home. In the past, diminishing leaders prevented the growth of others and the company, which led to quite a bit of turnover of good people. Stick with the short-term vision, the people who have stuck by you, and continue to hire people with new perspectives and specialties who are also willing to learn and grow with the company, rather than point out everything that’s wrong. It’s easy to find problems, it’s harder to drive solutions - the more people that are solutions-oriented and skilled, the better value they’ll add to the company and the more things will continue to change for the better. Continue to guide the more tangible visions (focusing on the 10-year plan loses some) without bothering as much with the day-to-day and you may be surprised at who rises up with their own ideas and execution. On the more material side of things: offering employees a 401K matching benefit soon would make a huge difference for some. Moving towards laptops and more remote-access materials would make a significant difference for others. These may seem like small changes in the relative scheme of things, but as I learned from our building change in 2016, small changes can create a larger impact than expected. Everyone seems warm and great during the interview process, and it's quite a different experience once you begin working there. Knowing you play a role in connecting owners with their pets is satisfying. Gain experience in transferable skills and technology (ex. Customer Service, Time Management, Salesforce, Microsoft Outlook). Most the employees as people are good individuals. If you are looking to get your foot in door somewhere, gain experience and move on then this place is great for you. Depending on where you are in your career, maybe some of these are Pro's, but not for me (see expanded explanations below: Lack of Career Growth Dangerous Culture No Accountability -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 12.0 2.0 5.0 2.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 683920 Open Advice to Management/Employees/Future Applicants: Personally, the number one con is that there is no room to grow or advance career wise at Petrelocation. I only worked there for sixteen months and I can honestly say I saw the production team structure change 4-5 times minimum. Title and role changes often occur to provide the image to employees that growth is occurring. Being an employee that worked in an admin role and not a production (Sales/Client Care) one, there was no chance to grow with Petrelocation, not even fictitious titles. Non production is not valued here and is viewed as easily replaceable. Culture: Culture and Core Values are a big thing at PetRelo, they preach it from the application phase all the way through the daily grind. I am a believer that having a positive work environment will help keep employees happy and the overall success of your business. However, if your culture is becomes TOO focused on the fun, the long lunches, the "working" from home, the when is the next happy hour, etc. and not about business first, it will fail. No company can sustain the work/life imbalance that occurs here. Metaphorically speaking: The animals shouldn't run the zoo...period. Accountability: I have never worked somewhere where there is no accountability for your actions or the work that you do (or don't do). If continued growth and success is the actual goal here, employees need to be held accountable, stop treating this potentially great business as a friendly endeavor. Hold employees accountable. When I first joined Petrelocation in late 2015, things seemed very positive. New leaders were put into place and structure was being established for continued growth and success. Since then, many promising employees have left, all leaders have chosen to leave or been fired (but we'll say it was their choice to leave) and growth seems like the furthest thing from possible right now. My advice: bring in a real CEO and have the owners step aside from the day to day, rehire leaders to establish structure and accountability and bring in additional sales people that sell. If it upsets long time employees, let them move on. I write this review not because I am bitter towards Petrelocation, because I am not. I was given a great opportunity and I truly left when I felt the time was right. I believe in what this company does and changes need to be made to make it successful. Transparency is also preached at Petrelocation. I have felt extremely supported since I started a year ago and I am thankful to work at such a fun office atmosphere. They are wonderful about flex schedule as we are dealing with different countries, time zones and out of office work time. I wouldn't necessarily say this is a "con", but it is an emotional job. You are dealing with peoples' most precious cargo and it can get emotionally charged. As long as you can deal with a level head, you will be just fine.
