Nice People, Frustrating Tech Stack

Relatively laid-back atmosphere, competent and friendly people. Half of the code was very well-written and organized. Recruiting process is pretty solid, although it does seem that sometimes engineering candidates were put on hold if someone better was in the pipeline. Other teams like support are really on the ball.
|
The biggest con was that about half of the tech stack was written in a way that was not easily maintainable, testable or scalable, to the point where even minor updates were frustrating. Some major stakeholders were opposed to change and were often not present at the office or not responsive. Technical leadership was somewhat lacking.

Rewarding, Interesting and Fun

Philo is an awesome company to work at, as an engineer I have the freedom to work on problems that I find interesting while contributing to a product that I believe in and use on a regular basis. The team is incredible, each person brings their own unique abilities as well everyone is extremely helpful, encouraging and everyone values each others ideas. Overall atmosphere is a pleasure to work in as well as the punny jokes don't hurt either. Each and every person is extremely dedicated and passionate about their work and it shows in the company values and in the product itself. The work life balance is great and extremely flexible, which I truly enjoy. Also there is a good amount of company fun activities that help foster an atmosphere where I love coming into work each day.

Not that I can think of, except maybe 401K matching would be nice, but it is not unusual that startups of this size do not have matching.

Philo is a wonderful place to work. The culture is very friendly and inclusive. Currently a good size: not so big as to be impersonal, but not so small as to require crazy hours or wearing too many hats. Hours are flexible and rational, and vacation is encouraged (and exemplified by leadership). Benefits are decent for a company of the size/history/funding. The leadership is technical, and are very open and accessible. The building's nice, and centrally-located in SoMa.
The engineering culture specifically is great. Meetings and unneeded process are kept to a minimum; what do exist for those are constantly iterated on to find what works and what doesn't. There's a big focus on learning and sharing knowledge, both within teams and throughout the department. The org structure is mostly flat, with ideas and technical competency trumping hierarchy and seniority. We strike a good balance between shipping code and minimizing technical debt — and all team members ship code, regardless of title. We work with cutting-edge technologies where they make sense, but avoid dogma on either side of that debate. Engineers aren't silo'd into working on one specific thing, but are free to work on what they find interesting. Discussions and debate are encouraged, with an eye toward making sure even the quieter team members have their say. Recruiting is a department-wide concern, and we're prioritizing diversity in hiring.

All-around great gig

Philo is a next-generation TV product with tons of happy customers and a plan to take it to the next level. It's a great place to be an engineer as the technical work is super interesting (legitimately cutting edge, with a healthy relationship to open source) and management is all very technical. The entire staff is funny, fun to be around, wicked smart, and kind. The SOMA office is modern, comfortable, seismically sound, has an awesome friendly little dog on the 3rd floor, and has a private sunny roof deck. Philo employees are encouraged to dogfood the product at home, so it's basically like having the best TV product in the world at home for free. Compensation is competitive and hours are sustainable (vacation is encouraged and modeled by leadership!).
