The folks that work there are all great and the community is awesome. Full time benefits package is great, lots of time off.
|
Leadership is frustrating, pay is not great, lots of red tape, poor communication from leadership and interdepartmentally, turnover is really high. Not many opportunities to move into Full Time positions.

Best job I ever had if you can afford it
|
|
The people I worked with are amazing. The mission and goals of the Phoenix Zoo and ACNC are amazing. Working with animals in education is awesome. Working in a fun reflective office was amazing.
|
The pay is absurdly low for how much experience and time they want from employees. You probably won't get much of a raise most years and there is little room for you to grow within the Zoo. You will have to move to another zoo to further your career.
It is a non-profit, you will always be understaffed, underfunded, and generally mismanaged. Also the hiring process takes months.

Look hard at your turn over rates and the training systems you have in place.
Look hard at your revenue streams and why our fundraisers don't bring in as much as they used to.
Look hard at why you spend so much money advertising to the same people who already come to the zoo. There are lots of people in our communities that aren't reflected in your guests.

Very fun job educating guests, you get to hang out at the zoo all day.
|
In the summer it's tough with how hot it gets. Also lacks training on how to approach guests when they break a rule, which there are a million of. Sometimes feels more like security/baby sitting the guests instead of an education position.

Wonderful place to work
|
|
-A very fun place to work
-Fulfilling, meaningful work; I feel like I'm doing something that really matters in my position.
-My managers are wonderful. They're reasonable, kind, and very approachable. They care about you as a person and they care about your growth.
-Everyone REALLY cares about their job
-Coworkers are fun and interesting
-CEO (Bert) is really cool, he began his career as a zookeeper and worked his way up. He knows what he's talking about and earned his position.
-I am proud to work here. I believe in the zoo's mission wholeheartedly.
|
-The pay isn't amazing but they are a non-profit which I think is important to remember and, personally, I'd rather make a little less at a job I love with great management than make more at a job I hate with management that makes me miserable
-It is hard to move into a keeper position if that's what you're looking for but there are pathways like Volunteer Keeper Assistant and it does happen. Remember that it's notoriously hard to get a keeper position anywhere.
