Productive and fun place to work

If you stick around long enough you will learn a lot about your discipline. You are given tougher projects as you prove yourself. The pay could be a bit sweeter.

Flexible, stable, challenging

Excellent company to work for overall
|
While the company itself as a whole is excellent, how busy you are seems to vary from department to department. While one department might be all hands on deck all the time, people in other departments might be frequently seen standing around shooting the bull or surfing the internet. There are people who are very good resources for information, but some of them don't always seem to be willing to part with that information, even if they're expected to. Deadlines too often are pushed off to last minute, then it's hurry up and get everything done. Apart from that, they offer excellent benefits, and opportunities for advancement.
|
Excellent benefits from a company that cares about it's people
|
You might end up finding yourself under the gun to get projects finished

They hire entry level and recycle new ones every couple years
|
They like new graduates so they can profit more from their lower cost to employ them. You will regularly do work above your payscale because it's cheaper and higher profit for the shareholders. A lot of employee turnover as well. A lot of "rednecks" that try to run the company.

Had a short commute

Only 2 weeks off a year, low pay, lack of experienced staff

Good for high performers
|
Pre-COVID, we were mostly office based and had moved into a newer, nicer office and had a lot of in-person collaboration. We've been at home 6 months now (and will be for a few more months) and things went a lot better than I think everyone expected, in part because the company had already started to upgrade systems for more remote work. Toughest thing is not seeing all my coworkers I enjoyed working with, but at least we have good technology to still coordinate. Probably toughest on the new hires who didn't get to see as much of the relaxed and informal culture before.
POWER is a demanding company, and some folks who just want to get by don't fit in well. The above average folks are ultimately rewarded through salary increases, great bonuses, and longer term potentially shareholder status. They are also focused on the long-term, so people who come and go after a couple years don't get a chance to experience all the benefits.
|
Long-term growth and stability. Relaxed culture, flexible company.
|
Gets nice and busy at times, sometimes its a bit light.

Was terminated without notice and without cause!
|
Be careful with this company!! After being trained for a designer role for two years and eventually being promoted(without a pay increase) to a designer role and investing a lot of time and money to develop me as a designer, I was terminated, without notice!! The so called cause was lack of performance, despite having had positive performance reviews and pier reviews since starting with them! In the three and a half years working there I had three different supervisors. During my time there, five senior level engineers left to work at competing firms. It was a very unprofessional work environment and if you don't fit into their mold it will be very frustrating to say the least! In the long run they did me a favor as I went to work at a much better firm. A firm that actually cares about their people!

Chaotic and rushed projects and schedules
|
Good people there. However I found that some of the things that were used to sell me on taking the job, were not present once I started working.
Very little mentoring, supervisor was almost always unavailable to help solve problems and almost no time to help get me up and running as promised.
Most projects seemed to be either behind schedule, or some other issue that would require pulling other staff from their scheduled projects to assist in "putting out fires".

Management Problem
|
Management there likes to micromanage. Management creates processes when they themselves don't understand the process themselves. As long as financial revenue is coming in they are happy. No good training for new people coming on board and old school systems as well. People were nice but there was lots of gossiping too.

The people for most part were nice. I felt very limited on what I was capable of doing as I was able to accomplish 3 years of work in 18 months.
|
Review work if given any. Fix changes or mistakes made. I could learn 1 new software PLS-CADD and use temporarily two others I was not familiar with but accomplished what they asked with ease. I also used AutoCAD and Microstation daily. The management tried to keep me busy, and the Design leader's plate was too busy to manage my training or workflow. The surrounding people were amicable. I enjoyed staying busy when I could and using my brain to try to figure out ways to do things or what questions to ask if I didn't know. The hardest part was not knowing some information and how to fit into the culture better.
