It's been great!

Scheduling is relaxed. Expectations are clear from the beginning. And being or thinking outside of the box is encouraged. Everyone on the team is super kind and optimistic.
|
I work from home, which I see as a huge benefit. Others may not be as keen to the idea of independent or less guided kind of work. We meet enough to feel like I know the team, but still excited to actually meet the them in person for a happy hour post-Covid.

The team is small but made of fantastic people who are all a pleasure to work with.
Each team member gets to play a significant role in the development of the company and its products.
The leadership is very open to making changes and using the correct tools for the job meaning we get to use modern technologies and learn cool new things.

Sometimes it feels like a bit more planning could go a long way rather than jumping into projects.
But with that said, management does a good job of trying to be aware of their shortcomings and be constantly improving. When something doesn't seem right they are quick to first apologize for their failures rather than blaming others.

- Smart, dedicated and friendly staff and co-workers. As with most start-ups, you are often working/collaborating with coworkers in other departments and with diverse backgrounds. There are many opportunities to learn and expand your own skillset or knowledgebase, which makes work interesting and fun.
- CEO has a clear vision and is easy to talk to and engage with.

It's a start-up, and thus, it suffers from the typical growing pains that all start-ups have. One needs to be able to roll with the punches, shift priorities as needed, and be able to deal with uncertainty as it arises.

I worked at Practichem as a sales/marketing intern during the summer of 2014. This internship has been an invaluable asset to my career. What I appreciate most about this company is the freedom I was given as an intern to use my creativity and new ideas to leave a lasting impact. I felt valued, and appreciated all constructive critism that allowed me to learn. I enjoyed the fun and fast-paced working environment that Practichem offered me. There are so many benefits that come with working for a start-up, including working directly with upper level management and gaining invaluable mentors. I could not have asked for a better company and experience to begin my career.

Not everyone has the stamina and motivation that is required of employees who work for a start-up. Practichem is constantly innovating and looking for new ways to grow and improve. Accomplishing goals takes hard work. It seems as though those who posted negative reviews were looking to hide out in their office and surf the internet all day. It was clear to me when I interviewed with Practichem that it was not that kind of company. One should never expect to be coddled here, but that is the absolute best part. For those who are motivated to accomplish more than push paper, Practichem is the company for you.

When looking for employment out of college, I knew I wasn't interested in putting on a suit and trying to impress HR managers to get a job pushing papers; I'd already tried that route during co-op! Practichem offers quite the opposite- I was able to jump in and immediately begin creating products that had a direct impact on the company's future. The technical team works very closely with each other, which has allowed me to gain a much broader field of knowledge compared to being pigeon-holed to one task. As a mechanical engineer, I never thought I'd be writing Python scripts and navigating the Linux command line! The nature of the market means that if you have a good idea, almost every modern manufacturing tech is at your disposal. In one year, I designed and had built parts with machining, injection molding, thermoforming, carbon fiber forming, extruding, and rapid prototyping. Being able to test out ideas with the in-house CNC is also a great plus. The culture here rewards productivity and getting projects across the finish line. I believe this makes me a better engineer, and I can come home every day feeling like I really pushed the company forward.

The downsides of Practichem are pretty universal across start-ups. Namely, if you don't like what you do, you won't last. Working at a small company is all about balancing priorities. People who succeed here are able to determine the most important task at hand and follow through. If you're interested in building a company, you'll love it. If you want to ask the boss what to do next, well, you won't like it here :). Yes, the hours are long. Yes, design changes can happen fast that blow out a week of work. Those days suck. However, until you're at the top of the hill you have to be ready to make changes to meet customer demand, and I get that. You'll be paid less than your peers, but it's a startup. High-risk high-reward is the name of the game.

Before you apply know what you are getting into. This is a start up. It is chaotic and will require a lot of personal fortitude and hard work to thrive in this kind of environment. You should also have an interest in chemistry or creating lab equipment otherwise you will not be satisfied with what you are doing.

Interns are more than cheap consultants. There isn't a lot of time to train new hires or interns but it would be beneficial to mentor your interns and have clear goals and objectives for them so that they can succeed and have serve a purpose at your company; even if its for 3-4 months.

Working for a Start-Up - Challenging and Rewarding

I have been employed at Practichem in an administrative position for several months and this is the second time in which I have been afforded the opportunity to join a start up in the early years.
Yes, there are many areas of responsibility which keep me challenged, engaged and extremely busy. Yes, priorities change on almost a daily basis. There is nothing unusual about that. No-one will learn, grow and advance by carrying out the same routine tasks every day. This is the way start-ups operate. For myself, I love the challenges and the opportunities to volunteer for a task and be allowed to gain the knowledge required to successfully master a new skill.
The organization may be flat, however employees are on a first name basis with the owners, who treat everyone with more than the basic respect and cordiality and who lead by example. The owners work hard and put in longer hours than the employees.
As is the norm with any start up, all employees will have the ability to grow and advance as the company grows. The future will be very bright and rewarding for anyone who wants to work hard and is willing to take a step into the unknown and master it!

The only cons that I see are ones that an employee may create for themselves. If you are not enthusiastic, energetic, willing and eager to accept whatever comes your way, don’t join a start up! They all start with the same challenges and will all suffer the same growing pains, but if you have the fortitude to stay the course (as often as it changes) great satisfaction and reward will come your way.

Opportunities to create modern web based software and not constrained to support outdated broswers (IE). Rewarding and challenging technical projects that allow for the freedom to innovate and explore. I have learned a lot about CoffeeScript, Jade, Angular, HTML5, WebSockets, and more.
Working with a team of fun and smart developers in an agile environment. Practichem provides each developer with dual 27" screens and a powerful laptop, which I really appreciate.
The office is quiet, and people are focused on their work, which reduces distractions and interruptions. I really enjoy being able to sit out on the balcony overlooking the park, when it is nice!
Good work will get rewarded.

The company is a start up, which can be a concern, but it also leaves plenty of room to grow.
Like any start up, the company cannot afford to have weak performers, and has released a few over the last year. I think that any successful company would have to evaluate and release people if they are not meeting expectations, poorly performing or constantly disrupting the team. I don't really see this as an issue for any company.
We have also had some growing pains with our IM and video-conferencing solutions. I suspect that these issues will get better over time as the company grows.
