Afterwards, days were spent in a cubicle sifting through tutorials and any potentially useful information I could find. Once I found something useful, the last few weeks were spent writing code before testing and debugging in time for a presentation. I learned a lot by mostly self teaching and a few helpful bits of feedback from my supervisor. The hardest part of the job was the amount of new programming languages and software to learn on my own while also conceptualizing a way to create a new piece of software. If you have a lot of programming experience going in, this may not be as difficult for you. Culture is not too formal, though also not as open and welcoming as other places. Most senior managers have little or no management skills and either tell you what you want to hear or outright lie to you. Getting a decision made will take months regardless of complexity. Promotions are rare and not based on skills or experience, the HR signs emails with "pronouns she/her/hers" which tells you all you need to know. 90+% of all new jobs are hired from outside. Long term employees are leaving and no one understands the equipment they were responsible for, especially a new hire who has never seen this type of equipment before. DOE has complained about many facets of lab operation but they do not know how to make it better. 5 deputy directors for operations in 3 years resulting in constant direction changes and emphasis changes. Repairing main experiment is taking years with constant changes in leadership. Average age of staff is about 60 years old with a nasty attitude of entitlement. The engineering organization and processes just had a total reconfiguration after the flagship experiment NSTX-U self-destructed in 2016 from shoddy engineering and mismanagement. NSTX-U Recovery is estimated to cost over $100M USD and last past 2021, and cost the US leadership position is fusion research. The culture is one that celebrates mediocrity as anyone with a brain moves on to more rewarding projects elsewhere. The mid-century facility is infected with black mold infestation and a general climate of bad mojo. The scientists are top-notch and they are working on incredible projects. As an intern during three consecutive summers, I was privileged to work with the great minds and exhilarating projects of PPPL. Tasks involved laboratory work and small projects suited to personal skills and interests, and each term ended with a formal presentation of completed work. Project focus ranged from hands-on engineering to computer-based simulation, each personally challenging but enjoyable. Managers were friendly and engaging, and other staff were always polite and seemed to enjoy the interns' presence.
