Out of all the retail jobs I've had this is probably the one I've enjoyed the most. If you want to grow within there's opportunities. Management is encouraging.

Declining, hope I’m wrong

There are some nice perks to working at REI. Benefits are available at varying degrees for ALL employees. Discounts are very good. The customers are generally very nice and appreciative of what REI is known for- knowledgeable outfitting for whatever adventure you’re going on.
That being said, if other stores are experiencing what our store is, those experienced outfitters are leaving at an alarming pace. The culture has changed and it no longer feels like the co-operative it promotes itself as. The company and store leaders regularly ask for feedback through surveys and quarterly reviews, but do nothing to address most concerns. Management seems extremely bound by what they can and cannot say/do (or they may just be paid well enough not to advocate for their supporting staff, who knows). The most that has been done at my location is instructing stores to create “culture committees,” in which the work of fixing issues management and headquarters have created, is put back on powerless sales associates.
The disconnect between those making decisions and those actually working in customer-facing roles is so vast and they do not seem interested in bridging the gap to salvage those relationships and ensure REI remains a co-operative and a place you can go for expert advice.
Basically, it’s a decent place to work with some cool perks and okay pay. If the culture REI promotes is extremely important to you though, be aware that the general outlook of senior staff (at my location, anyway) is that a lot of those values (outdoors for all, work/life balance, etc.) no longer apply to those of us responsible for promoting them at the store level.

Super fun coworkers and overall env. But your hours and raises are based on how many memberships you can sell. The company doesn’t live up to its ideals.

Lots of great training at the beginning! Many employees offer assistance if you have questions, managers check in to see if you're comfortable being on the floor. The culture seems a little fake, lots of undertones of frustration from non-management employees. Flexibility is often discussed but there is no easy and truly usable shift swap option which is an issue with only a one week notice on schedules. Discussions about expanding to other departments are met with resistance unless you have an "in" with a manager then you are given great options. My specific store seems to need more managers with actual management experience and not just some internal hires who struggle to take feedback from non-managerial staff well. I have walked in on managers in the back office numerous times chatting negatively about employees which obviously makes me know I can not trust management. Very pushy about memberships.
