Intelligent and hard working employees that bring out the best in their peers and love cross functional work. Company identity that is easy to rally behind and feel like you're doing positive and quality work. Due to the smaller nature of the company and difficulties with the current media climate growth can get limited. The loudest person in the room will frequently come out on top, often to the detriment to the rest of the team and company. There is a lot of freedom in coverage, reporters are much more often pitching stories than taking assignments. The newsroom places an emphasis on experimentation and breaking out of the established ways of reporting and presenting stories. A culture that encourages collaboration over competitiveness. There are very flexible work-from-home and remote-work policies. The staff is small but the ambitions are big, so often there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything management wants to get done. There isn't a lot of clarity around travel budgets so reporting trips often feel like they're predicated on the whims of a senior editor. Quartz is part of the segment of the media industry being crushed by coronavirus-related advertising declines. Reporters and editors often get poached by larger organizations with deeper pockets.
