CEO humiliates employees in front of everyone to see and hear. Do yourself a favor and trust the reviews. The CEO is a disaster to work with to put it at best and it is impossible to avoid interaction with him since it is a very small company. He is micromanaging, making it impossible to make any sort of decision by yourself. He will be involved in every little step of the process. He does not trust the employees to do their job. CEO has no respect for anyone and screams at employees constantly. He has no regards for his employees' well being whatsoever and treats everyone like they are replaceable any second. Steven Haimowitz is not a respectable man at all. Due to horrendous leadership, company morale is non-existent. People initially join the company with high motivation but eventually end up walking around the office like zombies regretting ever joining this horrible company within weeks. CEO does not understand that an employees performance/drive is affected by leadership. You will be treated like trash yet still will be expected to perform at your best. Very high turnover rate. You will literally notice there is an entire new group of people each year comparing pictures from its annual Christmas parties. You will often find employees making jokes whenever there is a new hire, betting how long they will last in the company. Countless employees have actually quit without any notice within days of being hired. The staff besides the CEO and some "directors" are great. There are a lot of good people who are unfortunately trapped in a horrible place. There are decent office snacks. Where to begin? The CEO! The level of detail that is needed to describe the sheer horror and insufferably that is the CEO cannot be covered in this review. The lack of integrity on the part of the CEO is palpable and his approach to “managing” a business is a kind of joke only Steven King could have imagined. The office environment is wrought with negativity and disrespect (and very blatant misogyny). There is zero pay transparency and you will find male employees with less experience and education starting at salaries 10K higher than female employees. Every conversation is a fight, nay a screaming match, no matter the context. If the employee tries to set healthy boundaries around communication they will suffer the consequences. If an employee has a life outside of work, forget it! The only way one can survive here is to abandon all outside activities and hope of a better life, and even then, that will not shield them from the screaming. Employees are expected to be open and available for his every mood swing at all hours of the day/night and implement clearly inappropriate and inaccurate ideas lest he admit that he does not understand how the product works. If the employee has a level of expertise above the CEO (which is basically everyone in the entire office) they are punished for it. Employees are rewarded on loyalty, not talent, and the company is subjected to a revolving door of talented people making consistency and the transfer of information impossible. And that transfer of information is vital because when one peels back the layers they will find a web of inaccuracies and non-truths. This is unsurprising, considering most of what is produced is orchestrated by individuals with a shaky relationship to transparency, a lack of regard for objective reality, and who are lacking the requisite knowledge and talent to be providing input in the first place. There is an overall deficiency in providing clear directives that forces employees to squander billable hours redoing the same projects over and over just to appease a man who is incapable of most importantly, interpreting and understanding the content and forming an opinion that does not change on the direction of the wind. Timelines are implemented arbitrarily by someone who has never even attempted to complete the project at hand and any input from seasoned professionals is ignored and criticized. Working here is subjecting oneself to unnecessary emotional pain and gaslighting to be a part of an organization with an unsustainable business model, a diminishing pipeline and revenue, and zero benefit to the employee in terms of sanity and career development. If you find yourself here because you are considering a position here, don’t. Look at all the recent turnover and see where leadership and culture are cited as the primary reason for leaving repeatedly. And then have someone else, who has the talent and experience, rebuild the products. Every employee is under intense scrutiny at all times. The suffocating micromanagement demonstrated by the CEO is a product of outwardly expressed disrespect and distrust. It makes every day an unnecessarily stressful struggle that, more often than not, ends with frustration and fighting. You will never be a part of the company. Only one person is a part of the company, the CEO. You are a somewhat necessary appendage and will be dealt with accordingly. Soul crushing lack of overall schedule flexibility. Distrust/disrespect is further expressed through this lack of flexibility. You cannot take a doctors appointment without using sick time (of which you are provided the minimum allowed by law). You cannot take care of any personal issues, no matter how pressing. In fact, one team was recently told that they are not allowed any vacation for nearly half of the coming year (seriously). The related policies do all but ensure that some of your (already low-balled) annual pay will be docked. Absolutely zero flexibility in hours. You cannot show up early and leave early or show up late and leave late. You cannot work from home. Yet, to the contrary, you will regularly be expected to work well beyond normal hours for zero acknowledgment of any form. No respect is given to employees; neither personally nor professionally. Beyond the near outrageous lack of professional trust and respect, employees are shown no personal respect. Employees are publicly berated and embarrassed (on a daily basis). When problems arise, all focus is put on finding a scapegoat - finding a solution is always the second most important task. Glaring ineptitude in management, the effects of which are apparent throughout the company. No true or defined path for advancement in either compensation, responsibility or title. Barebones benefits, no 401k. Pay significantly below the industry standard. No significant raises. Extremely high turnover as a result of the awful management. Multiple employees have left the company in just a matter of weeks after joining. It is beyond me how someone running a company can see this and not realize that it’s time for a major change. It is a perfect demonstration of the complete lack of proper awareness needed to manage and maintain a team of individuals. And Yes, major change is needed or this circus isn’t lasting much longer. All of the above contribute to the main point: This is NOT a CAREER. It is a job (at best). In fact, it's only a job if you’re desperate enough to put yourself through daily mental torment. They've been selling the same, dull, courses for years on a platform with buggy code and a business outlook with no scope for innovation. When it comes to leadership, it doesn't get much worse than this. The CEO is micro-managing, rude, and abusive. He doesn't seem to have heard of the terms 'mentorship' or 'employee welfare.' He's micromanaging, hovers over your desk frequently, and publicly undermines and shouts at employees on a daily basis. On one occasion, he slammed doors and stomped around the office, while consistently going back to shout at an employee. Something as simple as a delay on the subway on the way to work is taken straight out of your already insufficient (10 days a year?!) leave. Two of the Directors in the company are extremely sketchy, and make it an extremely uncomfortable work environment. While you may be given tasks outside of your job description and could see that as a chance to wear several hats, you will almost always be set up to fail, since the ask of you will be totally unreasonable and beyond your capacity or expertise level. In summary- practically no benefits, terrible work environment, toxic and childish senior management, frequent breaching of contracts and other employment-related laws on the part of the management and company, and absolutely no prospect for a successful career trajectory here. The CEO is verbally aggressive and invades employees physical space daily. He engages in extreme micro-management, and changes company policy on a whim. His strategies for employee growth include berating and belittling staff publicly, demanding unpaid/uncompensated overtime, disallowing staff to actually do the job for which they were hired, demanding continuous updates (on a minute to minute basis, yes literally, of progress). Also, he engages in (and allows a staff member to engage in) video and audio surveillance of the office without the consent or knowledge of staff. He will verbally agree to bonus/raise structure, and various other contract line items which he will never put in writing and will renege on at the earliest possible moment. He lacks even basic communication skills and prefers to expect staff and clients alike to read his mind. He is possibly the most disruptive human being I've ever come across who not only facilitates a culture of secrecy and distrust but actively encourages dishonesty and a lack of integrity in staff. A senior member of the tech team is an outright sexist/misogynist manipulator who has tacit approval of the CEO to behave in an unprofessional/aggressive/abusive way toward female staff. He has demonstrated on numerous occasions that he is profoundly technically ill equipped for the position, yet is able to abuse and berate his staff at will, frequently blaming them for his own mistakes and attacking them individually at length on a near daily basis. There is no potential for growth here, and no ability to advance or deepen your skill set irrespective of which department you're in. You are expected to reinvent the wheel, yet have no meaningful structure to implement changes to the very old and inflexible system necessary to ACTUALLY innovate in any meaningful way. You will never have a formal review or advancement structure and will not actually be provided with any concrete framework for evaluating your own performance. You will never have more than 10 days of vacation and 5 days of sick time and despite all positions being salaried, you will be docked/ expected to take a full sick day if you have to leave a few hours early for a doctors appointment. There is also no flexibility in working extra hours earlier in the week if you need to leave early later in the week. You are valued most heavily for having no personal life, no family commitments, and being willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for no recognition or compensation. (Specifically: working +40 hours per week, working on the weekend, working on vacation, never taking more than 1-2 days of vacation at a time, working while sick). Ultimately, this is an abusive dead end. You need A job.... you don't need THIS job.
