A company that wants to know it's people
|

Retrotech is a company that has many thoughtful and caring employees. I genuinely felt that my boss and the HR staff cared about me. Many companies say they have an open door policy but look down upon those who take advantage, but not Retrotech. I could always speak my concerns (whether something would be done to resolve them or not) without fear of retribution. In addition, at least in my department, if you could give a good reason for why you wanted to do something or make an improvement that saved on cost or increased efficiency it would actually be considered. The company also focuses on many team building events and activities. The large majority of the company is friendly and actually wants to do a good job. My boss was relaxed about work hours and was not looking into every minute of my work day. He trusted his team to get the job done and that worked out well for the department.
To create a list, the pros would be:
Culture
Work Life Balance
Dress Code
Open Door Policy
No discrimination or treatment of others differently based on people's differences
Time Off Policy is industry standard but the week off at Christmas is a great bonus
Benefits are fair and great for the company's size
Retrotech is the kind of company for people who want to stay in the same place their entire career. A company that you can put 20+ years in and know that you are a part of a family.

While the positives of Retrotech certainly are bountiful and certainly perfect for many people, there are some cons that made me give my three star rating.
Firstly, the company does not seem to adapt quick enough and in my opinion refuses to spend money when needed. I'm not saying that you have to spend money to make money, more like you have to spend money to stop things from breaking.
One of the potential issue that comes with being at a company for so so long is that it is easy to become stale and not want to change. I definitely got that impression from certain departments while I was working there.
In today's industry they say that the only way to really improve your salary and advance is to change companies. While I was not at the company long enough to say this is true for certain, what I heard from others is that this is true at Retrotech. It is my impression that individuals who are relied on so heavily were not being properly rewarded for their efforts or service time. Again however, i was not at the company long enough to say from my own experience. It is my impression that I would not be able to move up if I had stayed at Retrotech.

"Retro" is right.
|

Company is in a great market, lots of growth potential. They are experts at warehouse automation. Great new facility, nice activities.
|
Software practices are from 1980 - totally retro. Many people have been there for 20 years plus, and do not like change. The software group is CMMI Level -1. Onboarding is horrible. No documentation/comments, terrible code. Project decisions are up to the whim of the manager on a particular project. Not particularly friendly to newcomers. Travel is hideous, long trips to crappy places (to be fair, warehouses are in crappy places by nature).

Good place to work

Retrotech is a great place to work with high standards. They expect a lot out of people but are willing to give in return. The people are very friendly and many of them are friends outside of work as well.
The travel can be rough but also rewarding in both financial and personal sense. You will work hard in the field but you will have a strong sense of accomplishment when it's done. It's also a great opportunity to get to know the industry and your customers.
There isn't a lot of structure but that means you won't get bogged down in a lot of pointless documentation or busy work.
The new facility is fantastic, with nice furnishings, a cafeteria, a game room with pool and foozeball and a PS4 and even volleyball courts.

There is some resistance to change and some of their work methods are way out of date. Some of this is changing but the old guard is scared of new things and not generally willing to learn.
The pace can be unrelenting at times. They expect people to work fast without a lot of direction, projects are turned around quickly. This can be a positive if you have the right skills and attitude as well.
Travel can mean long stretches away from family and friends, especially if you happen to get on a bad project.
