Great firm that has adopted a streamlined process of getting the work done. I could see someone starting out in tax having a fun experience.
|
Some partners might not reach out to those who work on their files so I recommend walking into their office to say hello.

There are better accounting firms out there...
|
|
-Good work/life balance
-Offices have birthday events/holiday celebrations (the administration department is great)
|
-Poor communication: If you are someone who wants to grow and learn, this is not the place for you. Management lacks in communication which can put you at a disadvantage when they expect you to move up in the company.
-Lack of feedback: There is no proper feedback. Management does not give review notes often. Sometimes mistakes that are made are brought up months later. It’s difficult to grow with that kind of management.
-Excessive micromanagement: Managers micromanage staff too much and they can be too harsh/aggressive which creates a hostile environment.
-No proper training: There is no proper training for new staff coming in. They give tax returns and projects right away without the proper training. If you make any mistakes, you are held accountable. Also, like my point above, there is a lack of feedback. Managers fix mistakes themselves without informing the staff.
-Office politics: There is a great deal of office politics going on between the three offices. The culture of each office is different. Walnut Creek has a better environment and better managers. Oakland is known to be the worst. They have a very unfriendly environment that can make people feel uncomfortable. I have heard from other accountants about this issue. The shareholders tend to favor certain staff accountants which can make others feel very unappreciated and unmotivated.
RINA is not the way it is advertised to be. The environment and management make it difficult for staff to thrive and grow. Unfortunately, I have heard from other accountants working there and they have the same issues. Morale is very low and that shows how RINA really is. If you end up working there, my suggestion would be to work in the Walnut Creek office and find a mentor right away. Find someone there you can trust. Also, in time, you will notice the issues I mentioned above.

RINA, to become a better firm please read above and learn from that. Your turnover rate of staff will continue to be high if the issues above are not resolved and if you are not open to your staff’s opinions.

Good intentions, but minimal career growth
|
|
- Flexible schedule
- Offices have frequent celebrations (anniversary, birthdays, March Madness)
- Friendly staff accountants
|
- Poor mentorship (mentorship has become only a check in on availability rather than mentoring a staff, learning about where they want to grow and helping them with their issues)
- Tax vs. Audit politics (sometimes staff want to learn both rather than be pulled in one direction)
- Poor growth potential (unless you’re a favorite of a partner, it’s hard to get equal and needed attention)
- Feedback (tends to give only negative feedback at annual evaluation rather than letting staff know their errors throughout the year to learn and fix before the evaluation)
- Poor Poor review points (practically no review points to learn from their mistakes - tax specific. Tends to receive “I’ll take care of it”, rather than what the actual mistake was).
- Recognition of everyone’s hard work is minimal
- Culture is not great compared to other firms. (One office is great, the other two..not so much)

To have your firm grow, you need to built up all staff by having a better mentorship program, making managers and supervisors accountable to the growth of staff and listening to staff, and provide review points (how can we learn!?). It’s a trickle down effect, the heads of office create the positivity and recognition of the staff below. Be appreciative and get to know all your employees (their family, hobbies, etc) - this can go a long way. You’d be surprised about how hard people will work when appreciated and shown value.

-Really Flexible on hours
-Commuter Benefits
-Fair Starting Salary
-Genuinely nice people, despite being not the best management team
-More friendly culture than some other places
|
-Too many different managing styles
-Have to endlessly ask for work because there's little task delegation.
-No mentor system with someone who actually will help you do tax returns and explain what anything is/means
-90% of work doesn't get review notes. Only big mistakes get review notes.

Managers and superviosrs need to have a cohesive way of doing things. Some people blatantly tell me to shortcut things and "oh well SALY" and some want more diligence with accuracy of information. Training should include more real life clients, not just super easy and obvious scenarios.

Great work life balance, poor career growth
|
|
- good work life balance
- very nice people and laid back environment
|
- tax returns are often corrected without informing staff
- no proper training
-expected to work like robots during tax season without proper guidance
- work is very minimal outside of busy season and gain very little experience compared to other public accounting firms
- feedback is untimely
- no proper communication; and questions are never answered on time to get work done especially at the staff level

Great company to work for....
|
|
Working for RINA has been a great experience. They continue to push you to excel to another level. You may not understand it in the beginning, however if your overall goal is to grow with a firm for many years you will appreciate it.
|
Being that this a CPA firm the advancements are for Accountants and Auditors. Everyone else will be stuck in there position unless someone retire. This is very unfortunate.,

What is like to work at a regional CPA firm?
|
|
provides a good work-life balance
|
Treats all employees the same regardless of one's prior experience, education, progress or effort...great place for mediocre who just want to coast.

1. Less chargeable hours requirement compared to other CPA firms.
2. Allow employee work at home once a week to take care of family
3. Open door policy
|
1. Oftentimes rush out the returns w/o detail review for small clients.
2. Office politic between partners.
3. No instant feedback to staff. Some of managers don't even give review points and fix the returns themselves. Staff will never learn from mistake.
4. Push everybody to move up. Not everyone wants to be a partner.
5. Salary compared to other CPA firms is a little bit low.
