This may be less of an issue for people who have worked for years in their field, after they received their doctorate, placing them at a higher, cushier starting salary. However, if you don’t have much work experience (that wasn’t a requirement of your degree), then you’ll receive a base pay for doctorates in the mid-high $50k range and it will stay there. It doesn’t matter if you have a ton of experience that was a requirement of your degree. If you needed it to graduate, then it doesn’t count. In fact, you’d probably get paid higher if you stopped at a master’s degree and spent those additional years working. In other words, it’s one of the few places where it seems like you’re actually penalized for spending time and energy attaining the highest degree in your field. And the people who know anything about the strenuous requirements of your degree, aren’t the ones who determine your worth. Pay increases for individuals with doctorates is solely based on years working at MCCD, but again, this doesn’t happen. Once hired, your experience at MCCCD is not recognized. Incoming employees who have the same degree and years working, will get significantly higher starting salaries because their work experience was acquired elsewhere. In other words, your MCCCD job-specific knowledge, skills, and experience are worth less than an incoming employee’s relevant, but less MCCCD job-specific experience. I don’t think anyone takes the job for the pay. But nonetheless, this is extremely bad for morale. Otherwise, colleagues and management, for the most part, are supportive. However, this varies significantly by department and campus. There is also a lot of flexibility and autonomy. Working on an academic calendar is good for work-life balance if you can afford it. I think if a person stays motivated and watches out for developmental trainings; it can make the difference. 0.0 0.0 3.0 3.0 1.0 3.0 3.0 1.0 Jan 29th, 2021 08:13PM Mar 19th, 2021 08:00PM Rio Salado College, North

NOTHING is handled consistent with typical business practices. Many practices are barely on the edge of legal. When anyone questions a policy or practice, they are told it's "The Maricopa Way." Employees basically write their own policies, which leads to gross inequities. The HR department is a figurehead, crippled by the power afforded to the Faculty Senate, and the Employee Senate to make decisions. Nepotism reigns supreme. If you are one of the "pre-selected" candidates (and that is common across the District), it doesn't matter what the interview questions are like, you will be selected. It is rarely a fair hiring process. In some colleges, most employees are related to someone else at that college. Run away, fast! You don't want to work here. Pay is very competetive, but most employees still think they are underpaid. Very negative organization, terrible morale across the District, no clear leadership, lots of interim leaders, we can't get good candidates for leadership positions because Maricopa's reputation is pretty bad, lots of turnover of senior level positions. 0.0 0.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 2.0 4.0 2.0 Jan 29th, 2021 08:13PM Mar 19th, 2021 08:01PM Rio Salado College, North

The workplace is hostile to anyone not in the "in" group. The atmosphere is ageist and not diverse as far as age, experience, or any opinion that doesn't agree with those in charge. Students are seen as threats and they are not listened to or heard when they have concerns. Difficult to believe these people call themselves professional. 0.0 0.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 Jan 29th, 2021 08:13PM Mar 20th, 2021 01:09PM Rio Salado College, North
