Make this your plan C company
|
If you are *seriously* desperate, consider a job here. Make this your plan C. There are plenty of agencies in Chicago to apply to. If this is your first offer out of school, please continue looking.
The company is cheap, and most jobs are moving overseas. There are a number of people in very senior level positions that are completely unqualified (hint, they do this to save money). Experience is not appreciated here. They will look to pay you as little as possible as you are now competing with their offices in mexico and buenos aires. Turn over is high, and almost everyone I know here is underwater. Your job will probably be at risk to the over seas offices if not immediately, it will happen soon. Again, they are looking to save money and pay people as little as possible. If they could get away with paying you minimum wage, they would.
Do yourself a favor, look elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the website. There are very negative reviews of this company for a reason.
If they make you an offer, demand an additional 20% or walk away.

Great place to learn, not a long-term location
|
Great staff and team who are eager to teach and work, but work/life balance takes a huge hit (it's an agency, so no surprises there). More flexibility than your standard agency setup--WFH is allowed, for example--but still far behind corporate workplaces.

Company is unraveling fast
|
The company is hemorrhaging good employees over the last few weeks. The recruiters are using old numbers on the phone with prospects that are between 30 to 50 employees higher than current headcount due to exiting staff. Don't be fooled. Rise is not a "rapidly growing" company anymore. Stay away, there is zero job security here and you're better off building your skills elsewhere.

Excellent place to work

I learned more about Internet marketing during my 2 years at Rise than I've ever learned in my life. Projects were all intellectually stimulating and had a large enough variety of clients and reports to always stay interested. Everyone I met from peers to managers were friendly, helpful and supportive. Great location, too, near several major bus routes and Chicago's two main train stations.

Fast-paced, sink or swim agency environment

A typical day involves juggling the needs of several clients and constantly re-prioritizing daily tasks. Often there is at least one client call, which requires review of a report, developing strategic recommendations based on the data and preparation for the meeting.
The hardest part of the job is being stretched so thin that one is unable to devote enough time to every client. Working at a company that is growing so quickly, there just aren't enough hands to do all the work. The hiring philosophy is also to bring in people without industry experience, which does not lighten the work load, but rather increases it for others who need to ramp up new employees. The account team structure is flat, but the exec team is so busy that those who report directly to senior management find they cannot get time with them to learn, develop and grow as account managers.
For the most part, the Rise team is great. Because the company is still relatively small, everyone knows each other and gets along well. Beer Fridays are always enjoyable, and the company wants to put an emphasis on creating a fun culture; however, there are other issues, like the lack of experienced resources and work/life balance, that need to be addressed first.
