Top notch land services company
|
|
I am writing this to get access to Glassdoor, but EPI is really a top notch land services brokerage firm and deserves credit for it. Here are the pros:
- Upgraded payment system so contractors are always paid on time bi-monthly even if client has not yet paid their invoice (direct deposit is available). Prior to that, they paid contractors when the client paid and they never held on to your checks to collect interest as many brokers surprisingly do while simultaneously touting their high ethical standards. Points should be awarded here for integrity.
- Very professional owners and managers in an industry where professionalism is sometimes left to be desired
- Full-time client service rep is great at keeping quality contractors busy working when clients shift gears. Contractors benefit from a great client development group in the main office.
- Project managers tended to be much, much more professional than at other brokers I have worked for including field and in-house
- Very ethical group that has never pressured contractors to slow down or not work as hard. You get to work as fast as you can and perform to the highest level you can to benefit the client. EPI does very good work on short turn-around projects. Some brokers are known for milking their clients and being punitive towards contractors who don't conform to said milking of clients (cough cough cinco cough). EPI cares about doing quality work.
Overall, I have been very happy with my experience with EPI.

There really aren't any cons except those that are the nature of the industry.
People needing the security of employment should learn about being an independent contractor before complaining about their broker for downsides of being an independent contractor. There are pros and cons.
Contractors must buy their own insurance, but often the pay makes that pretty reasonable to do or people use a spouse's insurance. For some people though, that isn't a good fit.
If you need the "prestige" of being an employee of Standard Big Oil Company, then being a contractor may not be a good fit.
99% of complaints I've heard were just about being a contractor in general and didn't have to do with EPI specifically. Or they had to do with clients not paying on time prior to the upgraded payment policies. Or they had to do with other policies set by clients. I haven't really heard any complaints in the last few years though. Everyone seems pretty happy here.
Contracting is the nature of the industry and many people working here actually prefer it so they can just do the work without dealing with company meetings, etc. Also, if you stick around long enough, you will get to work at many different companies and get broad exposure to the industry that is sometimes hard to get as a long-term employee tied down to one location and one job. Many people have also leveraged the quality experience they got at EPI to become employees in the oil and gas industry. What you do ultimately depends on personal preference and EPI is always professional about it when people leave to take employee jobs.
