Unpaid Overtime
|
There are several issues with RMF but this review will focus on the major one that drives most engineers away - unpaid overtime. RMF purposefully understaffs its projects and offices which results in massive amounts of unpaid overtime being required to push an unfinished design out the door. This results in errors and mistakes that have to fixed later on, resulting in more unpaid overtime.
The overtime itself is not the problem, some overtime is normal for most engineering firms. The problem is how RMF chooses to compensate overtime: they don't. All of it is unpaid, and exchanging overtime for personal hours is not allowed. You could work 60 hours one week to meet a deadline, but don't even think about taking off early that next week (even if it's a slow week, which it almost never is).
Unsurprisingly, this work culture drives engineers away quickly, resulting in high turnover. The only people who stay are the people who unfortunately don't know any better or the shareholders who benefit from the unpaid work of engineers.

Good place to work, everyone there is focused on learning and is willing to take time out of their day to teach and provide mentorship. Deadlines are very reasonable, and there is an emphasis on independence. Managers rarely breathe down your neck and trust the quality employees to do what they need to do.

Terrible Toxic Work Environment
|
RMF is very Cheap and always understaffed therefore they put all this work load on you to do. And when you don't meet the deadline they aren't understanding they yell and CUSS at you. Yes they actually will CUSS you out at this job. They always have favorites and if you aren't one of them you can forget about a promotion or raise. They expect you do do way more work than what your job description actually says. RMF Lost about 10 employees over the past year. All of those were do to low pay and bad management/work environment. None of the Co-Ops/interns come back to work with us because they all say how much they hate it. OVERALL DO NOT WORK HERE. DO NOT BUILD A CAREER HERE.

Pretty relaxed work environment with friendly, welcoming coworkers

As a mechanical engineering intern, my work consisted primarily of updating drawing corrections for drawing submittals and sifting through university building archives and compiling information about the state and configuration of their current HVAC systems before onsite assessments were performed to verify my findings. There were days where there was very little for me to do, so I would sometimes invent tasks to fill the time; however, our office was generally busy enough for coworkers to find me at least one task that wasn't busy work. Most of the work done in the office is done on AutoCAD, so at least some familiarity with the software will allow you to hit the ground running on your first day. Revit would also be good to know as many coworkers suggested that company might make a transition to this software in the future. Per usual for an intern, I was compensated at an hourly rate of $17 an hour, which seemed more than fair considering my very minimal work-related experience going into this internship. The office does have ping pong table as well a fully equipped kitchen making work there very pleasant and laid back. All of my coworkers were very nice people and they never expressed irritation when I asked for assistance/clarification in my daily tasks. Additionally, the office will go out to eat together for a Friday lunch at least a couple of times every month, so that's another plus. Great learning opportunity and a good place to get your first experience with mechanical engineering. I leaned plenty!

Great people, always understaffed
|
People are very friendly and sociable. Under-staffing major issue outside of summer season (once interns leave). Working multiple 60+ hours week consecutively with no comp days. Projects are good, but some jobs are "floating deadlines", or get it done and get it out asap or too aggressive with limited staffing.
