Interesting, eye-opening experience in news publishing industry

My direct supervisors were awesome to work with; very laid back and cool (though they were often already busy or overloaded with their own work when it came time to review my own work). However, a big turn-off form working there (even temporarily or part-time as I did) is the fact that all my superiors seemed to loathe the managing editor and would semi-openly voice their disdain for him. Also, due to print's struggle to make a profit these days, it seemed like everyone was always bracing themselves in fear of when the next round of layoffs would occur.

The Salt Lake Tribune has been operating as a professional newspaper for more than 100 years and competes well with other papers. It is full of intelligent people who work well together and who meet daily deadlines. There is enough time off for meals every night. It is easy to stop the presses to add or delete stories. Managers oversee the staff but do not interrupt them when things are going at the normal speed.

Fast paced and good enviornment

I enjoyed customer service position at the SLC Tribune. I excel at helping others with a good attitude and a lot of experience. I am also quick with cash handling and organization. I learned a lot about sales and was very successful at it. A typical day could be slow paced or fast paced. I worked purely on commission.

I spent time at the Salt Lake Tribune as a political reporter, and it was incredibly difficult, yet rewarding. I learned so much and improved my writing and reporting abilities a great deal. My editors empowered me and gave me their trust with every assignment, and provided helpful feedback after every article. I worked remotely, so I never had to go in to the office, but all my correspondence was through e-mail and every message I received always had a tone of urgency, which was stressful, but thrilling.

Experience is highly dependent on position
|
Working as a reporter in the field could be a good experience, but office staff are stretched thin. Many are required to perform two or three jobs due to layoffs. Managers are mostly incompetent, don't know how the company's publishing software works, don't know who performs which tasks. Technological issues are rarely fixed and typically come packaged with new sets of problems.
|
Paid vacation and sick time, work can be fulfilling in the right position, new owner and upper management is attempting to turn things around.
|
No 401k matching, poor health insurance, no dental/vision, understaffed, small or no raises, difficult schedule

Day to day on deadline
|
I spent the day creating and maintaining contacts as well as leaving the newsroom to develop feature stories. For example, I spent an entire summer documenting the trials and tribulations of a first-year group of professional umpires for a series of feature articles for which I received an Associated Press award. The job often involved travel and writing for a daily deadline, often with only minutes to complete task.
