The firm has somehow gotten away with paying paralegals on a salary basis for years, which is actually illegal in Minnesota - paralegals are required to be hourly per state statute. This gives the attorneys free reign to take advantage of the paralegals' time, many of whom are working 40-50 hour work weeks. Most attorneys rely on paralegals to continually educate them in patent law procedures, so that they only need to worry about writing patent applications and responses. Most attorneys essentially "check out" and leave the management of the clients to the paralegals without overseeing anything that is going on. The firm has a pattern of firing staff on the eve of their 10-year anniversary with the firm and then replacing the more senior staff for junior staff that they can underpay. In this firm, it counts on who you know, not what you know. Nepotism is a common place in this firm. When we discussed my salary right before I was terminated (this was not a coincidence), they argued with me over a few thousand dollars a year pay increase. Two years later, I now make $20,000 more per year and am slotted for another 3% increase this year. Silicon Valley location in downtown San Jose is something. (But not remotely enough to make up for all the downsides, like hostile management and not enough work.) Rather than openly discuss shortage of work from the Silicon Valley office being fired by multiple big clients, management blames employees and fires employees to make work for favorite employees. On a floor with ~20 people, 7 people fired/left in about 8 months. (Draw your own conclusions). Great clients, nice people, great staff, excellent IT and internal systems. Schwegman has been by far the best firm I have worked for. Review is efficient and fair. Partners are knowledgeable and review is always friendly and respectful. Partners don't "steal" associate time as I have experienced at other firms. Billable requirements are flexible and allow associates to choose their work/life balance. Most importantly, I feel appreciated and that the partners care about my future. New clients are assigned to associates with the expectation that they will one day become the associate's client. There is no backstabbing or other territorial behavior that I have experienced at other firms. The staff is great and the in-house systems make accessing information and entering time a breeze. Schwegman also offers a pretty decent free snack situation and a free lunch every Wednesday.
