It Was A Great Company

|
When I worked at Sentrana, they offered their employees a healthy benefits package, a competitive salary and flexibility in their work schedules. It was one of the best companies I have worked for.
|
The only con I can think of is they didn't know what direction they wanted to go in.

Sentrana hires uniformly excellent people - super smart, kind, and collegial. The company had some huge, early success before I arrived that was guided and envisioned by the CEO and management team.
- Great office space
- Great benefits/salary
- Caring atmosphere
- Well stocked kitchen
- Lots of employee activities - real care about employees
- Excellent internship/coop program

Not the worlds worst run company but they are close

Free food
Job security- As long as you tell the CEO what he wants to hear and never show any signs of free thought you can work here forever.
Low stress- Since there is no chance of advancement or growth you will never have to worry about getting more responsibility. Also, since all the "work" you are assigned is either made up by the CEO or an exercise in futility designed to waste your time you never really have to worry about making a mistake.

Pretty much everything. This company has been "changing direction" and on the "cusp on something new/great" for so long I don't even think they know how to create anything anymore. If you take a job here you will never advance, learn nothing, accomplish nothing and worst of all your career will stagnate something future employers will take notice of.

The office has a convenient location, snacks and drinks are freely available, and there are generous employee benefits.
|
Sentrana's management and employees are confused. There is a strong desire to replicate its initial success, which was novel and built off of well engineered luck. Unfortunately, Sentrana and Syeed revere the process they used too highly, institutionalizing it in the hope of repeating their first success.
Syeed is Sentrana's biggest problem, whose skills and interests no longer complement Sentrana's new business reality. He is immensely insecure and narcissistic, needing to surround himself only with those who agree with him. Those who continue to work at Sentrana do so because they have to (visa constraints forbid movement between employers), are immensely loyal (the first group of people who gave the company its first success), or those who are there for the money (analysts and product managers).

Stunningly mismanaged at the highest levels of the organization - avoid at all costs

There are certainly pros to working at Sentrana. Firstly, their above-market compensation is lovely. Secondly, they really are good about investing in their employees' professional development.
|
Bad CEOs are divisive - they undermine a company's sense of unity, undermine erode in the organization, pit colleagues against each other. Truly awful CEOs, the worst of the worst, are unifying. Such is the case with Sentrana's CEO, Syeed: he is universally distrusted by his employees, uniformly regarded as lacking the most basic of leadership skills, and acknowledged widely as a man who seeks constant praise and affirmation from a small posse of sycophants and yes men, to the obvious and unmistakable detriment of the company. Syeed has managed, over the course of his tenure, to reduce the company's revenue by 800%, to drive away top talent by relegating them to unrewarding and mindless work should they ever dare to disagree with him, and is personally responsible for the departure of three top industry executives consecutively in the past two years alone. Advancement at any level is impossible without his capricious approval (remember that this is a very small company). Go to Sentrana if you're looking for a cushy salary and gentle pace of work, but stay far, far away if you're looking for a well-run company that genuinely respects its employees and will offer legitimate opportunities for advancement.

- Collegiate, respectful culture with a healthy dose of humor, while being driven and type-A at the same time

- Demanding environment: this is not a bad thing for those who are keen on learning new things and keeping up with advancement of science and technology.
- Sometimes, some inconsiderate individuals use Sentrana's generous investment on training as a platform to move to larger companies, such as Google, despite knowing that Sentrana has made significant training investment on them and relied on them. Sentrana belongs to talented individuals with moral principles. For instance, I had personally been sought by other companies and offered job at higher rates ($40-$50 higher than my current salary); however, for the above reasons (pros), I preferred to stay at Sentrana.

Syeed Mansur, the CEO, does not know what he is doing. He wants to be involved in anything and everything and anything he touches, he negatively disrupts. He drives the smartest and most knowledgable people away and all he wants are employees to say 'Yes' to his wild and non-proven approaches.

- Essentially a failed to launch startup that is now struggling to pivot but can't figure out what to pivot to
- The CEO, while well-meaning, tends to make unilateral decisions that affect the company's direction without first doing real market research and testing
- It's clear that upper management has to spend a good amount of their time planning around the CEO and managing him
- High turnover in the last 6-12 months
- The engineering/technical teams in particular have had high turnover, and management of them is now being done by the CEO

Bring in a new CEO as an external hire and move the current CEO to a CRO role or something similar. Stop allowing the current CEO to go off-script when conveying messages to the company as a whole. The messages end up coming through as overblown and demoralizing, instead of having their intended effect. To quote Dirty Harry - "A man's got to know his limitations."
Decide what kind of company you want to be, and commit.

Sentrana is a great place to work and has an awesome working environment. The managers are approachable and want their team to be successful. It is also a great place to grow as you work with some of the most talented people in the business. The company has a great culture as well that makes you feel like you are part of the family and that learns and grows together. Benefits are great because caring for employees is a priority at Sentrana. It is very rare to find a company like Sentana!
