Good Team, difficult company

Got to work with a small team of wonderful people, we went through a-lot together and the work environment was great.

I wish all the best to those who are still at SevOne. From outside now, it seems more and more, as the company has its course set. It had changed so much. Can't call it bad - it is simply not what I wished for it. The company that once had it, was full of people that loved the culture, the product and enjoyed doing it all. They should have invested in a product that is modern and follows the market. Even now they should do the necessary to keep quality high and drop more of the higher positions when things are not going well. Stop hiring individuals who are in higher management and are unfamiliar enough with the technology, motivated by their ill egos and profit making. They would come in with their big vision for changes which throws the company into a different direction and cripples everything but when their execution fails they would just leave one way or another to go try again somewhere else leaving chaos behind. Of course such people would make the company feel as a cold machine with no culture which would brake all motivation. On the other hand there is always another way for things to be handled - if it is the money motivated structure with employees who are led by only money motivated leaders - that's a different ballgame but I wouldn't like to be part of it and invest my energy in it, so for that part I am also grateful for their decision to let me go. For me it is always Higher management that should be taking the punch in favor of keeping talented engineers and mid management who don't have the wheel but are day in and day out working hard and doing their best - for what they were hired, directed and tracked for with successful records on KPIs!

I really enjoyed all the people I worked with. They did a good job of hiring quality individuals.
|
SevOne in a nutshell. Hired a lot of skilled and intelligent people to try and move the company forward with a new direction. Which was just a façade to only prop it up to try and sell the company, which ultimately didn't happen, so they let everyone go. Just hanging on to existing accounts with an old stack. Sad!

- A few dozen loyal customers continue to provide funding (Support fees) and direction of product development
- Some very talented & helpful people, though not sure how many are left standing after the latest round of layoffs
|
- Executive leadership totally inept
- 100% of Sales VP's (all 4) and CFO left in a timespan of less than 6 months
- CEO shines in non-presence
- No strategic direction
- No communication
- (Core) Product is hopelessly outdated; only customers with sunk investment show interest but are starting to question the lack of development
- All innovations (aka Solutions) lack QA and are released haphazardly often resulting in version-incompatibility and/or conflict
- New customers are 'enticed' with features that do not exist and the company will start to build once the PO is in
- The to-be-released product has 0% innovation and there are plenty of Open Source alternatives that more stable, cost-effective and will bring true innovation

Great people, sloppy direction

The engineers are all smart and talented and for the most part giving and easy to work with. The work environment is very laid back and modeled after California tech startups. Card games and beer fridge. Engineers are afforded some say in product direction.
|
Poor product management results in engineering providing much of the product direction, but with insufficient oversight. Strange division of labor in engineering leadership with some instances of conflicts of interest. Uninspiring benefits. "Unlimited PTO" in practice does not lead to more time off. Up and down profitability and risk of layoffs.
