All around involvement in multiple aspects of project. Significant responsibilities including field operations and office submittals. Was always given the opportunity to improve and impact the project.

Technological integration could be improved; Took a while to be registered in the system and be able to use AutoCAD to perform job functions

Great Company to Work For
|
|
Relaxed atmosphere and people are great to work with. HR did a good job of hiring people - no jerks here :)
|
They use vendors for IT Projects which makes implementing projects a little tricky to navigate.

It’s a cult!
|
|
There was a few several years ago but I cannot recall any pros working here.
|
No work/life balance. Don’t have an opinion you’ll get rat packed. Stuck in the property management of 20 yrs ago. Hourly you don’t have to answer the phone after hours...try it once....Armageddon of drama queens.

Get involved and see what’s going on. Even long tenure Shea employees are becoming corrupted by the miserable Irvine Co structure...if it’s so great why are you all leaving there?

Sales New Homes
|
|
You're selling a good quality product with a trusted name. I own a Shea Home as well, and can attest that it is efficient and high quality.
There are great people in this company, and for the most part they are some of the best in the business.
|
This started as a family owned, family oriented company. I was excited to work with Shea Homes because of that. What I found was the same old corporate attitude of "Bottom Line is everything" and "Employees are expendable".
I agree with most here that work-life balance cannot be achieved with Shea Homes, which was extremely disappointing from a company that CLAIMS to be a FAMILY driven business.
I heard too many times to be "Less Sociable"...in a SALES position...that's counter intuitive.
I also heard too many time, when trying to make a customer happy, "You don't work for them, you work for us" with very minor requests for customer service. Not a very good way to create relationship that Shea claims they value.
The Shea Family seems to be under the impression that their company is run in such a manner that the original values are the guiding force, they should pay closer attention to division management and see that the employees are not treated as family...they are worked until they burn out, then dumped for the next batch. It's shameful. :(

Treat people like family as you claim you do. Let your employees drive relationships that will create sales and referrals. Take time to laugh and enjoy each other and you'll have better success. Ruling with an iron fist is not necessary, and not in line with the "Shea Values" that you are supposed to live by.
I wish that I would have had that experience, I really thought Shea Homes would be "Home" for me for a long, long time. Boy was I disappointed.

Good people / Stressful Taxing Workload
|
|
Shea really feels like a second family the people are pleasant to be around and work with.
|
When you are at work, every day will be a frantic pace. It makes the days go fast, but you burn out quick. Be ready to multi-task because you will be doing several jobs at once. Deadlines are unrealistic for the amount of time you have available and there is pressure to work extra hours to make up for it. This is not a good place if you want to spend a lot of time with your family. Many departments have high turn over because new employees see the work load and leave. You will be expected to do the work of higher paid positions when they are over worked and cannot meet their deadlines. You will not be compensated for this work at the higher pay rate but will do the same tasks.

Hiring just one more person in specific departments would be enough to balance the workload and keep people from burning out or quitting. Don't expect lower paid positions to do the work of hire paid positions to make up the slack for not hiring enough people in those hire paid positions with out compensating them.

Old school family owned business - would like to see it innovate more
|
|
1. Owners are very smart, friendly, down to earth, easy to talk to. No egos.
2. Proud to work at a company making a quality product
3. Low turnover - many been there 10,20+ years
4. People are [mostly] nice and passionate to work here, it is like a 2nd family.
5. Managers don't micromanage.
6. Stable, diversified company since 1881
|
1. Old school - no formal telecommute/work from home policy. Makes it hard to attract and retain talent.
2. Base Pay and benefits not as attractive as it could be. No 9/80.
3. Corporate is in Walnut CA which makes it harder to attract top talent and provide attractable commute to most. Not a lot of good lunch options nearby.
4. "That's the way we've always done it" mentality will limit growth, morale, innovation with staff. New ideas aren't necessarily listened to. Old/stagnant processes could be improved with an open mind.
5. Some execs focused on wrong things- lower priority low level issues rather than higher valued strategic enterprise initiatives to really move the needle
6. Poor performers remain and aren't properly performance managed or removed. Higher turnover in some groups is explained away with excuses instead of dealing with the root cause.
7. Some departments/groups are geographically distributed - can be more difficult to collaborate in person.
8. Awarding merit and bonus is supposed to be based on performance, but I've seen it reduced/raised based on reasons otherwise.

Keep making incredible product and mentoring future execs/leaders. But hold all groups equally accountable for following/not following the rules. Look outside the 4 walls to see what others are doing to improve talent/morale/innovation/productivity.
