private:shoelace https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1808975 Apr 4th, 2022 12:00AM Open Open Shoelace Account Strategist No direction Nice clients, opportunities to get promoted and stay up to date with paid advertising, and a few great managers. This company has no direction and it shows with the high level of employee turnover. There were constant department restructures and low morale as employees were sometimes demoted for no reason. Unrealistic amount of work (in some cases up to 60+ clients to manage per employee at once) which meant long hours, poor quality of work, and a high client churn rate. Zero work/life balance and nothing put in place to prevent this when it was addressed. The founders aren't involved in this company anymore and don't seem to care about the growth or success. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 0.0 2.0 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0 1.0 3.0 1808975 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Apr 5th, 2022 12:03PM Apr 5th, 2022 12:03PM Shoelace Technology Software & Computer Services

private:shoelace https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1808975 Sep 1st, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Shoelace Account Strategist Lack of expertise, at all levels - The people that you work with are generally nice - There are virtual socials so that you can connect with people after work - There are some truly amazing people that come through here, but unfortunately they don't last long due to the environment - The "nice" that people portray doesn't last long (not everyone is like this, but there are a few people who are extremely political - surprisingly so for such a small company) - Dealing with a ridiculous amount of clients, unreasonably so - The Sales team has different incentives than Account Strategy team, so that a lot of clients they bring in aren't the right fit - A lot of managers are new managers, which is exciting for them! But they have zero training on how to be a good manager (which is something most companies try and provide to develop their people) - There is profound lack of actual media buying expertise. The company shifted from a SAAS to an agency quite recently. The majority of people who work here used to be Customer Success Managers and DO NOT have solid media buying skills. There are only two people in the company that do have any real expertise, but it's difficult for them to share their knowledge with the rest of the company due to office politics - The direction of the company does not make sense when looking at the market landscape, competition, and the competencies of the company. This is apparent in the high churn rate of clients (mismatch between what the company is selling to clients vs what the company can actually deliver). The company is trying to portray itself as "growing" to attract investors, but this growth isn't sustainable in the long run - The app that they have built is now obsolete. The dev team and CEO is now focused on building completely different technology, which is a different part of the business that works in isolation. The rest of the company is stuck trying to shift from SAAS to a true service company, but the majority of old clients still view the company as a SAAS and don't care about the new service model. New clients are being sold on high levels of service, but the company also can't provide THAT because everyone has too many clients and too little expertise to truly provide great service. 0.0 2.0 3.0 2.0 2.0 3.0 3.0 4.0 1808975 Open Upskill your people, in ALL areas. Everyone in the CSuite has no experience being in an agency or media buying, which is mind blowing. Hire someone that DOES. Middle Managers and Team Leads need to learn how to be good managers of people. Right now they're just focused on making themselves look good and cross-team politics. They do not create an environment where people are able to share how they really feel. When you do voice concerns or opinions, they are brushed off. Make it clear on how you can progress in the company. The possible development paths are super unclear, leading to many people wondering if their careers are going to stagnate if they stay here. Hire people with more media buying expertise. Right now the majority of people in the company have less than a year of media buying expertise. Stop hiring junior people, who only have other junior people to learn from. Hire more people with 5+ years of expertise so that the Account Strategy team can truly grow and deepen knowledge, instead of people glorified administrative assistants. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Sep 3rd, 2021 12:31PM Sep 3rd, 2021 12:31PM Shoelace Technology Software & Computer Services

People are talented, very nice, super helpful, you will get a long with everyone Competent and transparent management. The remote working-from-home culture is not for everyone. I'm a social person so missing out on office spaces and meeting colleagues in person has been a downer. I get that this is the format during COVID, and I appreciate how shoelace is committed to the digital-by-default format while adapting to changes to ensure its the best possible experience, but there are growing pains. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 5.0 1808975 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 0.0 Aug 2nd, 2021 12:50PM Aug 2nd, 2021 12:50PM Shoelace Technology Software & Computer Services
private:shoelace https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1808975 Apr 1st, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Shoelace Developer Toronto, ON Great company with lots of energy, and I'm never bored! I've worked at Shoelace for over 4 years now (there goes my anonymity!), and thought it was time to write a bit about the company I still very much enjoy working in! Echoing what others have written in here, the best parts of the job are the team and the work autonomy. I've previously work in places with a lot of dead-weight, and am thrilled to be working with only hard working and high achieving individuals. Of course, there have been times when negative attitudes brought the team and work down, but I've seen a major shift in the past year towards proactive engagement and solid leadership. The Account Strategist team especially has been ahead of the game when it comes to new rules and technologies that effect their work, and have been leaders in addressing these issues for our clients. It's very motivating to see what each team is working on and how they address any issues they face, and helps with team cohesion - I don't feel silo'd in my (at home) dev corner. Aside from hard working individuals, the people here are honestly just very fun, and very kind. I feel supported if I've ever had a rough day, and wins get celebrated often (emojis and gifs and card galore)! I even enjoy going to meetings! I was fortunate enough to be able to join the dev team as an extremely junior member, and was immediately embraced by the small nit team, and given mentorship. I felt respected throughout my transition, and involved in all aspects of the work, even as a rookie making rookie mistakes. With work needing to be remote this past year, everyone (especially Willow, our HR master) have done a great job at keeping people involved and not isolated - and it's opened up a whole new opportunity to hire great people from around the world. There's actually been days when I'm on a call working through an issue, and sometimes forget I'm remote. As for the work autonomy, I've really enjoyed not having a set time to clock in and out. Especially on the dev team, there is flexibility to set your own approach and timelines for a task, as long as you do good work and are available to collaborate. Alex as both our CTO and manager, is extremely fair and transparent. I think he does a good job at being fun while also maintaining the boss role. While early on the fun of Shoelace was the chaotic startup vibe, as the team has grown, the company has matured and there are now many good roles and processes in place - there's still lots of excitement to be had, but things are much more stable and organized, which has definitely lead to better outcomes and I'm excited to continue to grow with the company! I think the work autonomy and hard working attitude can sometimes be a double edge sword (especially for those of us without excellent time management) - I find myself sometimes not being able to "turn off" work. This is recognized by the team and we've had a few sessions to try and help with self time management. Major changes sometimes happen quickly - this isn't bad per-say but it does require a resilience. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 1.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 1808975 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 4.0 Apr 2nd, 2021 01:05PM Jun 30th, 2021 04:43PM Shoelace Technology Software & Computer Services
private:shoelace https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1808975 Mar 27th, 2021 12:00AM Open Open Shoelace Account Strategist Toronto, ON Great Place To Work - The team is amazing — HR has done a great job of picking people that are easy to work and get along with. While the work is remote, there are clubs and other after-work activities where you can get to know your colleagues on a personal level. I left with a lot of great friends. - With the constant changes happening in paid media, there's a huge focus on education through weekly learning sessions, guest speakers, and discussions. I learned a lot in my time there and the teachings were invaluable. - Great management. My manager was super supportive and did a great job of leading the team. Upper management is great as well. Super easy to talk to and always very transparent about what's going on with the company. - A deep understanding of the e-comm landscape. I personally loved seeing how all our different clients run their businesses. I felt that I learned a lot from this aspect of the job as well. Agency life isn't for everyone and ultimately, I found that it wasn't for me. Management is very mindful about work-life balance, but I personally found it was difficult for me to balance my time between multiple clients. If you aren't great with time management or have difficulty separating work from life, this probably isn't a great fit for you. With that being said, I have heard horror stories about other agencies and I would say Shoelace is probably one of the better agencies out there. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 1.0 4.0 3.0 5.0 4.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 1808975 Open Keep doing what you're doing.
