The projects challenge you to hone your skills, leadership pushes you to be better than you were the day before, and the organization is about collaboration rather than competition. If you are all about clocking in and clocking out, this is not the right place. I know it's cliche (and cliches are cliches for a reason) but this team works hard and plays hard together. When you want the ability to forge your own path and work on something meaningful, look no further.

The work is challenging, but you will be better for it. The days can fill up quickly and there are often tight deadlines and different projects pulling for your attention, so being able to personally prioritize is a must. If you thrive in environments like these, they won't be Cons, but just putting it out there for full transparency.

While at SB, I was able to learn so much in such a short amount of time. They have a lot going on, but it was an excellent environment for me. Everyone loves to help each other and work together to create a better project process, experience, and product. Whenever I had a question, I knew I could always ask another team member or leadership member. SB will offer you an opportunity you're looking for. For example, if you wanted to work on a project relating to healthcare, SB will make sure you are on the project for that specific want. This is important because it allowed me to learn more about what I liked and did not like when starting a new project with an industry.
Smashing Boxes is more than accommodating about time off, sick leave, and remote work (when we were in the office, back in 2019). Leadership is flexible when it comes to taking time off and working in different environments. Everyone is communicative and will take time to answer questions no matter where in the world they are.
The other comments about unfriendly or inappropriate management team members are outdated and incorrect. While at Smashing Boxes, my team members and I never had an issue with unkind or inappropriate leadership team members. Each manager is professional, kind, and knowledgable in their respected areas, including the current CEO.

Smashing Boxes has a lot going on. At times, leadership can become overwhelmed and might need a few moments to themselves. This is less of a con and just something to note. Most of the tasks/ projects at SB are self-driven, with you more relying on yourself and team members rather than leadership to ask questions and explore options. Overall, if the problem is essential, the administration will take the time to help guide the direction of projects or redefine client needs.

My advice to management would be to take extra time to understand where each team member is in their careers. Some team members might be on the lookout for higher positions "not filled" on the SB team. Current staff members were more than qualified to lead in a "higher-level" position and actively wanted them, yet management seemed not to want to fill these positions until a later date.

My first questions when I interviewed with HR were, “what in the world happened, and why did your design team leave such horrible reviews?” Although I was hesitant at first, I am BEYOND thrilled that I gave Smashing Boxes a chance and joined the team. I have been treated with nothing less than the highest level of respect from everyone throughout the company, including the exec staff. The workload is very reasonable–heavy on some days and lighter on others, which is expected in this type of environment, but all projects are intriguing and challenge my design abilities in the best way possible. Every Friday, the company gathers for a Zoom call where we spend almost the entire half-hour giving shout outs/thanking each other for things throughout the week. It’s exhilarating to be apart of such a grateful, hard-working, and knowledgeable team. I have zero regrets, and I’m really glad that I found my new work-home.

If you are capable, you will be given responsibilities quickly. This is a very fast paced , dynamic environment - if you thrive in that kind of setting you will learn a lot and be given ample opportunities to grow your strengths in various situations. If you are successful in your role, you will be recognized and rewarded. The teams are great and all work very hard and collaboratively together.
|
Ever-changing environment is not the best for everyone. Can be stressful at times. You have to be able to both take direction AND figure things out on your own. If you need more structure, this may not be the place for you. But if you want to rise up and create your own path // make real impact on a company and community, this is a great place to work. The turnover is a con, as the time invested in bringing new folks up to speed can really take over your day. But the current team is super solid and energized by working together.

I have been working at Smashing Boxes for a few months and my experience has been amazing. The company culture is great and I enjoy being surrounded by so many diligent engineers and innovators.
I started working for SB during the pandemic, so I have not had the opportunity to work in the office; however, Smashing Boxes’ leadership has done an excellent job to keep company morale extremely high during COVID. We have a weekly company standup (reserved for updates, fun questions, and shout-outs) which is an awesome way to keep everyone interactive, virtually.
It can be a very challenging company, mostly in part due to the fast pace environment and innovation taking place across all projects; however, I find that type of environment to be motivating so the challenge is a pro for me.
Considering the company is small, you often wear many hats which presents the ultimate opportunity for career growth.
If you are considering a career a Smashing Boxes, I would absolutely go for it. You will not be disappointed.

I came into Smashing Boxes, being told it was a time of transition and that things would get better. I truly believed I could change the design team for the better. This issue is you can only change so much, and at the end of the day, the COO and CEO are toxic to the core, and it trickles down to every aspect of the business.
The CEO and COO destroy client relationships and connections in the community. Their ego is unchecked and growing larger by the minute. They verbally abuse the team to the point that no one feels comfortable. This is not a place where culture can thrive because they are so abusive and controlling.
The design work is also quite terrible in itself. UX is nonexistent, and if you have enough time even to contemplate design decisions, then count yourself lucky. Instead, designers are treated with very little respect and are used to complete the client's wishes without any strategy or craft involved.
Lastly, the free intern program has outnumbered the employees at the company. The free interns are running entire departments and doing the work of regular employees. The company is taking advantage of them, and it's unfortunate.
