They brought food for the days you worked long hours. Opportunities to grow and learn. When I was there, I think they locked people in as salaried so that when tax time came around they didn't have to pay overtime for the days you worked 10-12 hours. Long days like these lasted for about 2 months. While it is true the workload can be tough at times, the best part was that you could learn something new if you were lucky enough to be cross-trained on multiple products. The products developed have so much potential, the team that supported the US sales/marketing/US support team was just incredibly talented, and the people you meet are truly those you would never meet anywhere else. The biggest takeaway I have is the environment a private company can have. A private company does not have to disclose many things, and while it was said over and over again that you can ask questions- you really can’t. It is almost impossible to move up in this company. You are stuck, unless you are handpicked. Sometimes it felt extremely sexist, other times it just felt like favoritism. If you disagreed with a superior’s methods, good luck being heard about it. One key thing was how the performance reviews are handled. You can be thinking that you are doing great, because the company loves when somebody is stretching themselves to unbelievable lengths to do everything plus more. When review time hits though, do not expect metrics, clear examples of when you have shown you have areas to improve in, or any new training to help get you to their standards. I say “performance” reviews, but they absolutely never come across that way. This company fosters a “fend for yourself” mentality. If you are proven to be loyal, which boils down to you living and breathing Span in a toxic manner, you’re rewarded. I had been warned of and started to see for myself those you cannot trust. A private company, no matter how small, definitely needs an HR consultant. There are so many lines crossed, miscommunication, and mental abuse that occurs. You are conditioned a certain way at Span, and if you don’t bite you will be pushed out or terminated. There are workers that came and went that made others feel unsafe and uncomfortable, but if they show promising results for the good of the company do not expect any changes. The most heartbreaking part of putting in any time or effort into Span is seeing how your opinion just simply doesn’t matter. Those on the frontline of support should be heard about what could help the clients, and more than a handful of times I witnessed where employees had genuinely great and well thought ideas, and were tossed out because someone, who has no day to day activity with clients, thought of something more cost-effective and “better”. Even when clients are leaving and telling exactly why a service is not meeting their needs, nothing changes. If it does change, it’s months or years later- but then the employees on the frontline are belittled for not getting the client back. Clients developed little trust in services due to this and many other issues, but that was ignored. Client retention is almost non-existent in Span as far as focus goes, which seems odd considering how expensive it is to gain a new client. If you are lucky or stubborn enough to last more than four quarters with Span, you will pick up on a never-ending cycle. Superiors pay no attention to what has been tested and failed, and spend time trying to reinvent the wheel over and over again, while tiring out employees who have seen how non-effective it all is. Speaking with the CEO is a coin toss. You never actually no what mood you will get, and eventually can tell when he is unapproachable. If you have something that cannot wait and needs to get done, be prepared to be attacked on a personal level. The hardest part when leaving was the realization that nothing I did mattered. I struggled for months making the decision to leave a company I planned my life around. Taking any sort of PTO longer than a day was hard because I felt like I needed to be there to help and keep working hard for a company that I believed valued me. My personal problem was not developing boundaries for the good of my mental health, which suffered greatly the whole time I was there. My anxiety of walking into work increased day by day, with every uncomfortable situation I was forced into. I grew tired and deeply hurt by many things that occurred weekly. I hated the person I became there, and my family told me for years how abnormal the environment was. I didn’t believe them, because I thought if I kept going I could learn to be better. Thinking I was the problem kept me there to continue to push, until I was at the breaking point and cried every night after work just wanting to scream “I quit” and walk out. I recommended Span as a workplace for my first half, but quickly started telling people to ignore job postings they saw. The turnover rate was such a blow to everyone’s morale, but was never addressed. Lunch time. Where to start. First off the hours are from 9:00am-6:00pm. BUT if you don’t stay overtime most nights management doesn’t think you take your job seriously and you will be let go. If you want any sort of life, don’t work here. They put you on Salary so they don’t have to pay overtime. You are promised all these great benefits when hired only for the benefits to be taken away a couple months later. The CEO has taken away long term and short term disabilities and is threatening to take away health benefits. He took away raises so don’t expect one. You will never advance here. The CEO Agie is ALWAYS threatening to fire. He is never happy with anything you do. He doesn’t do anything himself but sit up high in his office while watching you with the 10+ cameras and recorders he has all around the small office. He listens to your private conversations and watches your every move. Even in the break room. He logs into your email all day. He listens to the phone conversations you have with clients all day. It’s sick really. And the people he has run the place sit on their phone all day watching you too. It doesn’t matter how much money you bring in. How many clients you get, it’s never good enough. If you’re not in the click you will be fired. No one there actually has a position. There is no HR if you have a problem. No one to talk to. Agie has spy’s that will listen in on your conversations as if the recorders everywhere aren’t good enough. Agie will have team meetings every week and never have nothing good to say about anything. No one ever stays at this company. All new people every year which goes to show what this place is all about. The place is actually run from India. That’s where all the work is done. So NO it’s not an American Company. It’s actually based out of India. That’s where the software and tech comes from. The employees are actually really nice. It’s just a shame the place is run like a circus by people that make things up as they go. This place will give you bad anxiety. Hostile work environment that will be looked in to. You can see the direct impact that you make on the company Relationships: SPAN has some great employees working for them. Other employees are always willing to help you and are very friendly. This is what I will miss most about the company. Opportunity for company growth Lack of expectations: We never knew what was expected of us due to unrealistic goals that were not obtainable. Unprofessional: Working here reminded me of high school. Work should not be a popularity contest. Lack of job security: The whole company was threatened on multiple occasions by management that they could fire or remove our benefits whenever they wanted... A lot of the other negative reviews are accurate. You always feel like you are being listened in on, especially with the thin walls of the break room. If you decide to work here, be extremely careful who you say what to. Starting with Agie - CEO. He has no business acumen whatsoever. He believes he is qualified simply because he once worked as a photographer on Disney cruises. He is the problem with the business world today. Way too many under qualified "CEO's" running companies and guiding the careers of talented employees that know way more about the business or service side than they do. He simply has his position because he is friends with the co-owner who actually runs the show from India. That's right, a company that portrays itself as US based is actually run on the sweat and brains of a group in India. All in all, you can't believe a word that comes out of Agie's mouth because he only has his own interest at heart. He will use you until he no longer needs you and unless you desire to be back in high school competing to be in with the "cool kids" then this job is definitely not for you! Next the management team AKA "the cool kids". Not one of them knows what they're doing. They are simple head nodders that say yes to everything and idea Agie says. None of them actually have the education or background to do what they are paid to do. Literally, they are making it up as they go along. If you don't jump on board with their way of BS then they will oust you and turn Agie against you. Great for the unmotivated person who just wants a paycheck. This is not a position to further your career in SEO or writing. The CEO practices techniques that actually gets the sites penalized by Google. He does not listen to anyone with education or experience. What he thinks is right goes. Even when it comes to press releases, which are supposed to be direct and to the point, he argues for 900 word drafts that mention irrelevant information about other companies. Generally, the writers rewrite the same blogs over and over creating a mess of duplicate content then get literally YELLED at for negative results. Take a pass at writing for SPAN if you'd like to gain experience for a legitimate career. This whole idea that initiative is rewarded is false. Agie only listens to women who are willing to suck up to him by laughing at his jokes. I saw many men and those making legitimate efforts to better the company get pushed or bullied out. Agie will not fire you, instead, he likes to passive-aggressively push you out. I've worked in major corporations and much more high stress/high profile positions and never was once made to feel like I was so distrusted or incompetent. Plus the actual job and work was sort of ambiguous and didn't feel authentic or intentional in a clear way. I felt a bit bait and switched. The veil of the "fun" things aren't enough to cover up what it's really like to be there and feel like your intelligence and aptitude are never valued or taken seriously.
