private:spearmarketinggroup https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1190359 Apr 29th, 2019 12:00AM Open Open Spear Marketing Group Director of Operations San Francisco, CA The Talent at Spear is Astounding From top to bottom, in every department, you'll find some of the smartest and hardest working people in marketing. The executive team gives you a lot of freedom over process and there is virtually no micromanaging between departments. I've been given some incredible opportunities and been allowed to be creative with my department. The growth in culture and cross-functional leadership over the last couple years has been fantastic and the company is really moving in a great direction. As with most agencies, work/life balance can be a challenge. However, the team here is so supportive of one another it's easy to find some respite when needed. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 5.0 3.0 4.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 1190359 Open The team is so strong right now, so keep supporting them and great things will happen. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 6.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Spear Marketing Group
private:spearmarketinggroup https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1190359 Feb 4th, 2017 12:00AM Open Open Spear Marketing Group Account Executive Pleasanton, CA Great team that is always on the cutting edge! - Talented, well-respected team with a great reputation. - Excellent work environment that provides great flexibility (no commute, etc). - Exposure to the latest tools, technologies, and trends that allow you to step up your game in lead gen and marketing automation. - Exposure to working with some of the hottest and most influential companies in the Bay Area. - Really friendly, family oriented group of professionals with an open culture that supports and shares knowledge with each other, making everyone stronger. This encourages growth and management will help you learn and branch out to other areas within digital marketing and gain no skills if you so desire. - Being a virtual organization, there is not much face time with employees or clients. Would be nice if there could be more company gatherings. - Being dependent on the hours that your clients give you can be a bit of an adjustment for someone used to a steady salary. There is an ebb and flow that takes some getting used to. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 1190359 Open - When things are busy you do sometimes feel you are on an island without ultimate authority to make some decisions. This can be solved really easily by open communications and weekly touch bases (which I know some but not all managers do). 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Spear Marketing Group
private:spearmarketinggroup https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1190359 Feb 1st, 2017 12:00AM Open Open Spear Marketing Group Associate Copywriter/Editor & QC Administrative Such a wonderful place to work! - All the employees are so sweet and lovely to work with, and you really feel like you're a part of a team - They're open to suggestions on how to change processes if it'll improve how things run, and never stick with things just because it's "the way they are" - They're very good about undergoing the review process with employees and giving a raise as they see fit during your performance review - Very open to changing your job role and adding different responsibilities to your plate (if you so desire) to help you grow and move your way up - Flexible with hours and taking days off, which makes it a wonderful environment to work in This is one of the best jobs I've ever had, and every few months I wonder if I should return to Spear because I miss it so much. I would highly recommend working at Spear to anyone! - You don't get to see everyone in person super often, which is a bummer because the company has a great dynamic 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 1190359 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 2.0 Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Apr 22nd, 2021 04:31PM Spear Marketing Group

private:spearmarketinggroup https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1190359 Feb 26th, 2016 12:00AM Open Open Spear Marketing Group Account Executive Mixed Bag In general, working at Spear was a great experience. Unfortunately, significant growing pains contributed to an increasingly unpleasant environment and low morale of non-management employees. It's a great place for some; not so good for others. • Agency does outstanding work and has a great reputation within the industry. It’s great to work for a company that is recognized for its work. • Company has grown average of 25% over the past several years • President is an exceptional marketer; consistently recognized within the industry for his expertise. He has excellent business development skills and is about 75% responsible for new business the agency acquires. He is also exceedingly pleasant. • Creative and design teams are excellent—some of the best. Developers are smart and accomplished, and they work hard, and the marketing automation team is very good. • Position offered the opportunity to learn and implement the latest digital marketing trends • Virtual company—employees work from home which has many benefits (no commute; flexibility which is especially good for working parents). * Account Executives are expected and encouraged to work independently yet there are no clear, consistent guidelines about how much authority or discretion AEs have to make decisions. Client service managers, including the VP of CS, have their own accounts so are frequently unavailable to recommend or approve action by the AE. When AEs are forced to make decisions to respond to clients in a timely manner (or make independent decisions based on their knowledge and expertise), those decisions are often regarded as unsatisfactory. * There is a lack of accountability by client service managers when it comes to either internal or client problems, and most often, the fault for these issues falls squarely and unfairly on the AE. Managers cannot be counted on to defend AEs or to push back on clients whose expectations or requests are unreasonable or out of scope. • There is no HR function, which may be by design because without a formal review process, the company doesn’t have to reward good performance with pay increases, document any conversations (which leads to “memory” issues—i.e. “no recollection” of discussions related to HR) or justify decisions regarding employees. * The pay is far below industry standards and despite significant growth (20-30% year over year), profit-sharing, which is cited as part of compensation, is meager, at least for AEs. Because the company is virtual, nobody has insight as to whether they are being fairly treated or compensated. -1.0 NEGATIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 5.0 3.0 3.0 2.0 3.0 1.0 1.0 1190359 Open • Be more transparent—starting at the CEO level. Create an HR function. • Decide whether managers should manage accounts/process OR people; you can’t have it both ways. without compromising service to clients • Increase pay. Working from home has many advantages but at some point, it no longer compensates for the stress of the job and having to work under dysfunctional management. • Learn how to manage—seriously. Take a class; have an expert come in—do whatever you need to do to fix the problems. Virtual environments require different management techniques, better communication than a non-virtual environment, and a higher level of transparency. 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "President", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 1154004, "responseDateTime": "2017-02-08T08:59:16.39", "translationMethod": null, "response": "At Spear, we value self-sufficiency, initiative, and an independent work ethic. Some people, however, need environments with constant support, daily direction, and formal processes. We provide our staff all the training and support (in every sense) that would be expected and is required to operate a small, highly successful company. In this particular case, over the course of a year, the employee was given every chance to succeed, but when the fourth client asked to have her removed from their account, it was clear that her talents were better suited elsewhere.
